IBM Support

Solaris 10 Zettabyte File System (ZFS) support with ClearCase

Preventive Service Planning

This technote provides information about IBM Rational ClearCase support for the Solaris 10 Zettabyte File System (ZFS).

Support for Zettabyte File System for Solaris 10 in ClearCase was added in ClearCase 7.1 and with the updates to previous releases as listed in the table below.

Important note:
ClearCase MVFS interacts with underlying filesystems through an interface. Compression is an option provided by ZFS below this interface. Every filesystem has a set of options that change aspects of the filesystem, we only test with the defaults and assume appropriate testing for other options is done by the vendor. ClearCase supports the ZFS filesystem and we will accept calls on systems using ZFS compression, although we may under certain circumstances ask customers to reproduce a problem in a filesystem without compression enabled.

It is important to note that ZFS with compression may impact overall filesystem and application performance. Our assumption is that our customers will do the due diligence to determine any performance impact of ZFS with compression in their environment before deploying into production. The IBM Rational Performance Engineering team will make no claims, statements or provide benchmarks as to the performance and reliability of ZFS with compression enabled.

At this time, there are no known issues with using ClearCase with ZFS and compression.
