How to deploy the Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) Backup-Archive Client in a Novell Open Enterprise Server (OES) environment

Troubleshooting

Problem

This FAQ discusses deploying the Tivoli Storage Manager Backup-Archive Client in a Novell OES environment

Resolving The Problem

How can I deploy the Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) Backup-Archive Client in a Novell Open Enterprise Server (OES) environment

Novell Open Enterprise Server includes the NetWare operating system and the SuSE Linux Enterprise Server operating system. The Tivoli Storage Manager for NetWare Backup-Archive Client should be deployed on servers based on the NetWare operating system. The Tivoli Storage Manager for Linux x86 Backup-Archive Client should be deployed on servers based on the SuSE Linux operating system.

Does the Tivoli Storage Manager for Linux x86 Backup-Archive Client protect my trustee data

Yes, the Tivoli Storage Manager for Linux x86 Backup-Archive Client, beginning with Version 5.4, has support for Novell Storage Services (NSS) including all extended attribute and access control information.

Is there a migration path for backup data stored by a Tivoli Storage Manager for NetWare Backup-Archive Client

Currently there is no migration path in Tivoli Storage Manager for backup data stored by a Tivoli Storage Manager for NetWare Backup-Archive Client. When data volumes are migrated from a NetWare server to a Linux server, the NetWare backup and archive data stored in the Tivoli Storage Manager Server cannot be used to restore or retrieve data to the Linux server. When you migrate a data volume from a NetWare-based host to a Linux-based hosts, the Tivoli Storage Manager for Linux x86 Backup-Archive Client should be invoked to take a backup of all the data on the volume and it will be managed on the Tivoli Storage Manager Server separate from the NetWare backup data from the same volume.

I have file names with Japanese, German and other non-English characters. Does the Tivoli Storage Manager for Linux x86 Backup-Archive Client handle these file names properly?

Yes, the Tivoli Storage Manager for Linux x86 Backup-Archive Client is able to back up and restore any file name independent of the character encoding. Note that the Linux x86 Backup-Archive Client must be executed in a single byte locale such as en_US. For more information on locale settings see the "Setting language environment variables" section in the publication IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for UNIX and Linux: Backup-Archive Clients Installation and User's Guide.

How do I back up and recover eDirectory in an OES environment.

If you have an OES environment that is purely based on NetWare or if you have a mixed NetWare and Linux environment, you can still continue to use the Tivoli Storage Manager for NetWare Backup-Archive Client to back up and restore the eDirectory as long as there is at least one NetWare server hosting the eDirectory.

If the OES environment is purely based on Linux, you can use the Backup eMTool provided by Novell to create a hot continuous backup of the eDirectory. More information about using Tivoli Storage Manager and the Backup eMTool can be found in the Tivoli Field Guide Backup and Restore of eDirectory with TSM.
