Problem

This technote explains why the error []'file.xls' cannot be accessed. The file may be read-only, or you may be trying to access a read only location[] might occur when using IBM® Rational® ClearCase® to open a checked-in Microsoft® Excel file from a Windows® client when the VOBs are stored on UNIX® or Linux® running Samba.

Symptom

In a UNIX or Linux and Windows interop configuration using Samba, attempts to open a checked-in Excel (.xls) file results in the following error:

'file.xls' cannot be accessed. The file may be read-only, or you may be
trying to access a read only location.
Or, the server document is stored on may not be responding.


Note: When the file is checked out, it can be opened without the error.
