IBM Installation Manager processes updates from local repositories slowly

Question & Answer

Question

How can I configure IBM® Installation Manager to avoid a delay when processing updates from a local repositories when my computer is behind a firewall?

Cause

If you attempt to update the IBM Installation Manager or update one of the installed packages from a local repository while the computer is protected by a firewall, you may experience a long delay in response although the update will eventually succeed.

Note: The default preferences in IBM Installation Manager make it search first for the embedded update site URLs, which may be inaccessible if the computer is protected by a firewall.

Answer

If you experience delays in getting IBM Installation Manager to update itself or update an installed package, and you plan on installing from a local repository, then do the following:

  1. Start Installation Manager.
  2. Open File->Preferences
  3. Uncheck the box: Search the linked repositories during installation and updates

    Depending on your version of Installation Manager, this could also be called:
    Search service repositories during installation and updates
  4. Use the button: Add repository to select a local repository.
  5. Click OK to close the preference window.
  6. Choose: Update package
