LPM validation and migration fail: HSCLA296 HSCLA246

Troubleshooting

Problem

LPM validation and migration fail.

Symptom

Message

HSCLA296 The Dynamic Partitioning Resource Manager (DRM) capability bits for partition <partition_name> are null. The management console requires the DRM capability bits in order to determine if partition mobility functions are supported on the partition.

HSCLA246 The management console cannot communicate with partition doaxpd01. Either the network connection is not available or the partition does not have a level of software that is capable of supporting this operation. Verify the correct network and setup of the partition, and try the operation again.

Cause

LPM requires Dynamic Logical Partition (DLPAR) capability, but it is not working.

Environment

PowerVM Partition Mobility managed by HMC or FSM.

Diagnosing The Problem

Determine the Partition Mobility GUI management and ensure DLPAR operation is working for the partition name noted in the error.

Resolving The Problem

For LPM using IBM Flex System Manager (FSM) management

FSM version 1.3.2 reached out of support 4/30/2018.

For LPM using HMC

1. Ensure the mobile partition can ping the HMC using IP addresses.
2. Ensure the mobile partition can connect to RMC (port 657) of the HMC
TEST (as root):
telnet <HMC IP> 657
  • NOTE: Check with your network administrator to open up RMC ports on internal firewalls.  RMC needs both UDP and TCP for port 657 to be open between HMC and LPARs and its bidirectional communication.
3. Verify that MTU size is the same on the HMC and the mobile partition.
  • CHECK "netstat -in" on both HMC and LPAR to see what the MTU size is.
4. For more details, refer to Debug and Fix RMC Connection Errors.
