Question & Answer
Question
How to create a Virtual SCSI (VSCSI) adapter on the VIOS via HMC Enhanced GUI so that it can be shared by "any" partition in order to virtualize the optical device.
Cause
I want to configured a virtual SCSI server (vhost) adapter using the HMC Enhanced GUI to be configured in a way that "any" partition can connect as an option to shared the optical/DVD device.
Answer
The Enhanced GUI does not support adding a virtual SCSI server device without a dedicated client device. This was not enforced in the Classic GUI as it is now on the Enhanced UI. It can be achieved using HMC CLI, but it is no longer a recommended configuration.
The following document shows some good examples of using the HMC Enhanced GUI to manage virtual storage. The concepts in the new interface are different from Classic GUI in that the focus is now on manipulating the client partition properties and letting the HMC manage the VIOS devices as well as the profiles for both, the VIOS and client LPARs. Much more is automated and the document explains how to interact with the system when setting up storage.
