Abstract
Licensed features such as ports-on-demand are activated using license keys. There are several issues to be aware of as you use a licensed feature you purchased for a device.
Content
Ordering
Licensed features are ordered via feature codes for the product. For example, adding activation for 8 ports on the SAN32C-6 is feature code AJJE, and DCNM Advanced Edition is AJJD . When you order such features, information and instructions for the licenses are delivered with the product. You should make sure to find this information when you receive the device, and save it for future reference.
Delivery
You will receive a paper pack for each licensed feature which lists its PAK (Product Authorization Key) serial number along with a unique PIN number associated with the license. The paper pack should be in an envelope with a label such as this on the outside:

Retain this paper pack in a safe place. You need the PAK serial and PIN numbers from document(s) inside to activate licensed features. Instructions are included showing the web site to use for the activation process, such as the Product License Registration page.
To recover a missing paper pack, you or an IBM representative can contact the IBM Quality Hotline for help for this fulfillment problem. This is the same team you would contact if you were missing hardware components you ordered, such as SFPs. In the United States and Canada, call the toll-free 1-800-442-6773, or direct dial 770-858-8459. If you are in another country, use the direct dial number. When you open a case with the hotline team, they will send a form for you to complete describing the issue. If the request is urgent because you need to use licensed features soon, please include this information on the form so the team can prioritize your request properly.
Activation
To activate a licensed feature, log in to the licensing site indicated on the paper pack. If you have not created an ID on cisco.com, you will need to do this to register your device serial number to manage licenses (and to be entitled to download firmware updates for the device). On the Licensing Portal you will be asked to submit the device serial number, the license PAK serial number, the PIN number and your email address. The license will be activated and a license file will be sent to your email address. Use DCNM or CLI commands to install this license file on the device, and the feature will be enabled.
If you purchased a feature related to software, such as DCNM Advanced Edition, activating the license on cisco.com will involve the use of a Smart Account. Cisco maintains one Smart Account for a given company domain, e.g. ibm.com, so using it may require that you communicate with the administrator of the Smart Account for your company, so you will be able to log in and specify it when activating the license.
Tracking
When you order licensed features with a given device, the PAK serial numbers are associated with the device in the order. But they are not yet permanently associated with the device. If you ordered multiple devices with the same licensed features, you can use any of the PAK serial numbers in your order on any of the devices that support the same type of licensed feature. The PAK serial number is not associated with a specific device permanently until you activate the license on cisco.com.
For this reason, you should keep track of which PAK serial numbers you used on each device. Ideally you will simply use the PAK serial numbers assigned to a device in its order, so the paper pack will serve as documentation for which PAK serial numbers you used on the device.
Transfer
If a device fails and it must be replaced, licenses will need to be transferred to the new device as part of the replacement procedure. This involves providing the serial numbers of the old and new devices, along with information about the licenses installed, to the license team at Cisco. If an IBM service representative is handling replacement of the device replacement, they can assist with this step. IBM support can assist you if you are replacing a CRU device, and can assist the IBM service representative handling replacement if needed.
