ITM OS Agents: Installing maintenance via Interim Fix or Service Pack

Release Notes

Abstract

IBM Tivoli Monitoring (ITM) version 6.3.0 Fix Pack 7 now ships Service Packs which provide updates to the ITM OS Agents. This document describes the differences of installing the maintenance from a Service Pack compared to installing directly from a published Interim Fix.

Content

The IBM Tivoli Monitoring OS Agents previously published regular maintenance via Interim Fixes available on Fix Central.   An Interim Fix uses itmpatch and only updates the OS Agent files that have changed (e.g. kuxagent, kcawd) for the specific Fix Pack level.  For example, installing UNIX OS Agent 6.3.0.7-TIV-ITM_UNIX-IF0003 requires the agent to be at 6.30 FP7 base and will update it to 6.30.07.03.
A Service Pack is a cumulative patch for ITM Tivoli Monitoring, Version 6.3.0 Fix Pack 07.   It contains updates for Server components, shared components, and OS Agents.

The updates for the OS Agents in a Service Pack include the latest Interim Fixes for each OS agent.  For example
6.30 FP7 SP1 includes Monitoring Agent for Linux OS - 6.3.0.7-TIV-ITM_LINUX-IF0002 (6.30.07.02)
and
6.30 FP7 SP2 includes Monitoring Agent for Linux OS - 6.3.0.7-TIV-ITM_Linux-IF0003 (6.30.07.03)
The Service Pack README will list the Interim Fixes included for each ITM OS Agent.
Installing the OS Agent maintenance from a Service Pack uses sppatch and does a full agent upgrade.   This allows an agent to be at a pre-6.30 FP7 version (e.g. 6.30 FP4) and the agent can be upgraded directly to the version contained in the Service Patch.  For example, a Linux OS Agent running 6.30 FP4 can be upgraded directly to 6.30 FP7 IF3, without first having to be upgraded to 6.30 FP7.   The install via the Service Pack will also upgrade shared components on the system to the latest level included in SP1.  The following are the list of components that will be also updated, as applicable:
AC     32/64 Bit Agent Compatibility Package (Windows)
AX      IBM Tivoli Monitoring Shared Libraries
CI        IBM Tivoli Monitoring Product Installer
GL      IBM Tivoli Monitoring Shared Libraries (Windows)
GS      IBM GSKit Security Interface
JR      Tivoli Enterprise-supplied JRE
JM      Tivoli Enterprise-supplied JRE (Windows)
UE      Tivoli Enterprise Services User Interface Extensions
UI       Tivoli Enterprise Services User Interface
Whether the maintenance for an OS Agent is installed via an interim fix or via a service pack, the OS Agent will be at the same maintenance level (.e.g Linux OS Agent will report as 6.30.07.03).   The difference includes that the Service Pack does a full agent upgrade, updates the shared components, and allows the agent to be upgraded if running a pre-6.30 FP7 base.
NOTE:  Over time the direction is be to ship the patches via Service Packs and not both service packs and interim fixes.  If the associated interim fix is not found on Fix Central, then it has not been published as a separate Interim Fix.   If the patch is needed to be packaged as an interim fix (instead of a service pack) then a request would need to be made.
Pristine Install
A Service Pack also provides a pristine install via either remote deploy or the exportbundles option of tacmd for these OS Agents.
