Symptom
Users may find fan zone 2 (fan 3/4) is running with low speed after a DC power cycle and see over temp events on CPU2 / adapters.
Affected Configurations
The system may be any of the following IBM servers:
- System x3650 M4 HD, Type 5460, any model
- System x3650 M4, Type 7915, any model
- System x3650 M4, Type 7915 E5-xxxxV2, any model
This tip is not software specific.
This tip is not option specific.
The following system firmware level(s) are affected: IMM 4.97 (Build ID: 1aoo66m)
The system has the symptom described above.
Solution
This behavior will be corrected in a future release of IMM.
The target date for this release is scheduled for First Quarter 2016.
The file is or will be available by selecting the appropriate Product Group, type of System, Product name, Product machine type, and Operating system on IBM Support's Fix Central web page, at the following URL:
http://www.ibm.com/support/fixcentral/
Workaround
There are two (2) workarounds available:
- Restart the Integrated Management Module (IMM) to apply the correct fan speed. (Recommended)
- Issue an IPMI raw command to adjust fan zone 2 speed manually.
ipmitool -H <IMM_IP> -U <USERID> -P <PASSWORD> raw 0x3a 0x07 0x02 0xB2 0x01
Additional Information
When the system is installed with adapters with thermal concern, IMM should apply higher fan speed for cooling.
IMM has communication issues during second boot up and causes fan speed to remain low.
