Mellanox ConnectX-3 shows "Installed Version: Undetected" after update - IBM System x3550 M4 (7914)

Symptom

On system x3550 M4, type 7914, "Installed version: Undetected" is reported after updating the Mellanox adapter firmware (4.90.50000p6) with UXSPI.

The firmware is actually updated successfully, but the version check fails.

Affected Configurations

The system may be any of the following IBM servers:

• System x3550 M4, type 7914, any model

The system is configured with at least one of the following:

• UpdateXpress Service Pack Installer, version 10.1

The system is configured with one or more of the following IBM Option part number:

• Mellanox ConnectX-3 10 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter for IBM System x, Option part number 00D9690, any replacement part number

The UXSP build utility is affected.

The system has the symptom described above.

Note: This does not imply that the network operating system will work under all combinations of hardware and software.

Solution

This behavior will be corrected in a future release of System Update Package(s) system (Mellanox MLNX_VPI update for Microsoft Windows Server x86_64 tool).

The target date for this release is scheduled for first quarter 2016.

The file is or will be available by selecting the appropriate Product Group, type of System, Product name, Product machine type, and operating system on IBM Support's Fix Central web page, at the following URL:

Workaround

Use one (1) of the following workarounds:

• Use the Mellanox utility to check the updated firmware version.
• Use the Mellanox Utility to update the firmware of this adapter directly.

Additional Information

"Thyme Mellanox ConnectX- 3 10 GbE Adapter" firmware installed version is shown as undetected.

The issue can be observed by performing the following:

a. Install add-on card "Thyme Mellanox ConnectX- 3 10 GbE Adapter".
b. Boot into OS Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 x64 (UEFI mode).
c. Check Device Driver for "Thyme Mellanox ConnectX- 3 10 GbE Adapter" installed.
d. Compare "Thyme Mellanox ConnectX- 3 10 GbE Adapter" firmware by executing "<UXSP> compare".
e. "Installed version undetected" is shown.

There is a system Update Package(s) XML compatibility issue with the Common Information Model (CIM) provider. Users are unable to update the System Update Package(s) (Mellanox MLNX_VPI update for Windows Server x86_64 tool) due to the schedule impact with UXSP build.
