12 Gbs hard drives are not recognized by the system - Lenovo x3850 X6, x3950 X6

Troubleshooting

Problem

vWhen a 4x2.5-inch hot-swap, 12 Gbps, SAS/SATA HDD/SSD Backplane (Part Number 00AE927, FRU 00AE832) is installed in the system and a 12 Gbps storage drive (reference attachment) is optioned into the backplane, the storage drive(s) will not be recognizedby the system. See attachment for list of Storage drive options affected and part number info. ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/systems/support/system_x_pdf/12gbhdd.xls (where Part Number = Part Number, replacement part number = Field Replaceable Unit, Gbps= gigabits per second)

Symptom

When a 4x2.5-inch Hot-Swap, 12 Gbps, SAS/SATA HDD/SSD Backplane (PN 00AE927, FRU 00AE832) is installed in the system and a 12 Gbps storage drive (reference attachment) is optioned into the backplane, the storage drive(s) will not be recognized by the system.

(where Part Number = Part Number, replacement part number = Field Replaceable Unit, Gbps = gigabits per second)

Affected configurations

The system may be any of the following Lenovo x86 servers:

  • Lenovo System x3850 X6, type 6241, any model
  • Lenovo System x3950 X6, type 6241, any model

This tip is not software specific.

This tip is not option specific.

The PSOC firmware for the SAS Backplane is affected.

Solution

This behavior has been addressed in a 4x2.5-inch SAS backplane PSOC firmware release, version 1.10.

The file is or will be available by selecting the appropriate Product Group, type of System, Product name, Product machine type, and Operating system on IBM Support's Fix Central web page, at the following URL:

Download and install software update package: ibm_fw_psoc3_sgpio-bp-1.10 from Fix Central which contains firmware fix for this issue.

Note: An AC power cycle must be performed after the update.

Workaround

No Workaround.

Additional information

The POWER_DISABLE pin to the hard drive was erroneously being asserted by the Programmable System-on-Chip (PSOC) firmware so the drive does not power up.

The firmware fix de-asserts the pin.

Note: When the flash completes, the system error indicator (amber "!") Light Emitting Diode (LED) on the Front Op Panel will light along with all of the drive bay's amber LEDs. This is expected due to the previous firmware that was on the backplane. The required AC cycle is the only way to turn off the LEDs.
