After upgrading a ServeRAID M5100 Series Controller, or Flex Storage Node, with ServeRAID M5100 Series 512MB Cache/RAID 5 Upgrade, Option part number 81Y4484, to firmware 23.33.0-0018, the following message may appear in the event log.
'Battery has failed and cannot support data retention. Please replace the battery.'
Starting a manual relearn will give message that the 'Battery is not in a state for relearn.'
Indicators, however, show that the battery is optimal.
This can be verified through either the MegaRAID Storage Manager or via Storcli command.
For MegaRAID Storage Manager:
1. Open MegaRAID Storage Manager.
2. Click the "Physical" tab.
3. At the bottom of the left pane, click "BBU".
4. Observe in the right pane, the battery status should say "optimal".
For Storcli type:
1. Enter the command: Storcli64 /cX/bbu show all (where x is the controller number)
In the BBU_info section, users will see: "Battery State Optimal"

The 23.33.0-0018 firmware for the ServeRAID M5100 Series
SAS/SATA controller is affected.
Solution
This behavior will be corrected in a future release of ServeRAID
M5100 series and Flex Storage Node firmware.
The target date for this release is scheduled for fourth quarter
2015.
The file is or will be available by selecting the appropriate
Product Group, type of System, Product name, Product machine type,
and Operating system on IBM Support's Fix Central web page, at the
following URL:

Workaround
The error is false and can be ignored.
Additional information
The battery has not failed.
When the General Purpose Input Output (GPIO) status on the BBU
is updated by the firmware, values are written to the Electrically
Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory (EEPROM) and then a read is
performed. The written and read value are compared to ensure the
value is written successfully. In firmware 23.33.0-0018, the logic
to verify this is incorrect.
The battery does not need to be replaced.
