Vulnerability Details

Summary

SSLv3 contains a vulnerability that has been referred to as the Padding Oracle On Downgraded Legacy Encryption (POODLE) attack.

Vulnerability Details:

CVE-ID: CVE-2014-3566

Description: Product could allow a remote attacker to obtain sensitive information, caused by a design error when using the SSLv3 protocol. A remote user with the ability to conduct a man-in-the-middle attack could exploit this vulnerability via a POODLE (Padding Oracle On Downgraded Legacy Encryption) attack to decrypt SSL sessions and access the plaintext of encrypted connections.

CVSS Base Score: 4.3
CVSS Temporal Score: See http://xforce.iss.net/xforce/xfdb/97013 for current score
CVSS Environmental Score*: Undefined
CVSS Vector: (AV:N/AC:M/Au:N/C:P/I:N/A:N)

Affected products and versions

IBM BladeCenter Advanced Management Module Firmware v3.66K (BPET66K, BBET66K, BPEO66K) and previous versions are affected.

This applies to the following hardware platforms:

  • BladeCenter Advanced Management Module, Option 25R5778
  • BladeCenter T Advanced Management Module, Option 32R0835
  • IBM BladeCenter(TM)-E: Type 1881, 7967, 8677
  • IBM BladeCenter(TM)-H: Types 1886, 7989, 8852
  • IBM BladeCenter(TM)-HT: Types 8740, 8750
  • IBM BladeCenter(TM)-S: Types 1948, 7779, 8886
  • IBM BladeCenter(TM)-T: Types 8720, 8730

Remediation/Fixes:

You should verify applying this fix does not cause any compatibility issues.

Fix Central: http://www-933.ibm.com/support/fixcentral/

Product Version
BladeCenter Advanced Management Module — IBM BladeCenter T Chassis Update to v3.66N (BBET66N)
BladeCenter Advanced Management Module — BladeCenter OEM Chassis Update to v3.66N (BPEO66N)
BladeCenter Advanced Management Module — All other IBM BladeCenter Chassis Update to v3.66N (BPET66N)

Workaround(s) & Mitigation(s):

In firmware versions v3.66B (BPET66B, BBET66B, BPEO66B) and later, IBM BladeCenter Advanced Management Module can be restricted to use only TLS 1.2 as described at the following URL. See CLI command "crypt" to set TLS1.2 only mode.

https://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/bladectr/documentation/topic/com.ibm.bladecenter.advmgtmod.doc/kp1bc_pdf.pdf

After following these steps, connecting to the system will require a web browser that supports TLS 1.2.

IBM recommends that you review your entire environment to identify areas that enable the SSLv3 protocol and take appropriate mitigation and remediation actions. The most immediate mitigation action that can be taken is disabling SSLv3. You should verify disabling SSLv3 does not cause any compatibility issues.
