Summary

SSLv3 contains a vulnerability that has been referred to as the Padding Oracle On Downgraded Legacy Encryption (POODLE) attack. SSLv3 is enabled in Chassis Management Module (CMM).

Vulnerability Details

CVE-ID: CVE-2014-3566

Description: Product could allow a remote attacker to obtain sensitive information, caused by a design error when using the SSLv3 protocol. A remote user with the ability to conduct a man-in-the-middle attack could exploit this vulnerability via a POODLE (Padding Oracle On Downgraded Legacy Encryption) attack to decrypt SSL sessions and access the plaintext of encrypted connections.

CVSS Base Score: 4.3
CVSS Temporal Score: See http://xforce.iss.net/xforce/xfdb/97013 for current score
CVSS Environmental Score*: Undefined
CVSS Vector: (AV:N/AC:M/Au:N/C:P/I:N/A:N)

Affected products and versions

All versions of Chassis Management Module (CMM) are affected. This applies to the following hardware platforms:

  • Flex System Chassis Management Module, Option part number 68Y7029
  • Flex System Enterprise Chassis, Types 7893, 8721, 8724

Remediation/Fixes

For fix availability refer to Security Bulletin: Vulnerability in SSLv3 affects IBM Chassis Management Module (CMM) (CVE-2014-3566).

Workaround(s) & Mitigation(s):

In firmware versions v1.50.1F (2PET12F, released December 2013) and later, Chassis Management Module (CMM) can be restricted to use only TLS 1.2 by following the instructions here. It is recommended to update the firmware for any Integrated Management Module 2 (IMM2) or Flexible Service Processor (FSP) in the chassis to equivalent versions (IMM2 version 3.50 1AOO50B or newer; FSP version 773.10 or newer) before changing the CMM setting. Note that the NIST 800-131A option only applies to firmware versions 2.0.0K (2PET12K) and later and equivalent IMM2/FSP versions. Following these steps for the CMM will automatically change the configuration of any IMM2 or FSP in the chassis. After following these steps, connecting to the system will require a web browser that supports TLS 1.2.

IBM recommends that you review your entire environment to identify areas that enable the SSLv3 protocol and take appropriate mitigation and remediation actions. The most immediate mitigation action that can be taken is disabling SSLv3. You should verify disabling SSLv3 does not cause any compatibility issues.
