Firmware update fails due to lan-over-USB device not found - Lenovo x86 servers

Troubleshooting

Problem

When updating system firmware using the UpdateXpress System Pack Installer (UXSPI), if the updates are not successful indicated by the message: update(s) failed, or Install did not succeed, accompanied by this additional message in the UXSPI_IBM-Flex-System log file: Error flashing firmware: 0x3 (LAN-over-USB device not found.), the LAN over USB communication channel from the UpdateXpress Installer program running on the server operating system to the Integrated Management Module II (IMM2) was not connected and any updates could not complete. (where USB = Universal Serial Bus, LAN = Local Area Network)

Resolving The Problem

Source

RETAIN tip: H213531

Symptom

When updating system firmware using the UpdateXpress System Pack Installer (UXSPI), the update fails and the UXSPI_IBM-Flex-System log file shows:

Error flashing firmware: 0x3 (LAN-over-USB device not found.)

Affected configurations

The system may be any of the following Lenovo x86 servers :

  • Flex System x240 M5 Compute Node, Type 2591, any model, any AC1
  • Flex System x240 M5 Compute Node, Type 9532, any model, any AC1
  • Flex System x880 X6 Compute Node, Type 4259, any model

This tip is not option specific.

The following system firmware level(s) are affected :

  • IMM firmware TCOO08R or later

The system has the symptom described above.

Solution

This behavior will be corrected in a future release of Integrated Management Module (IMM) firmware.

The target date for this release is scheduled for fourth quarter 2015.

The file is or will be available by selecting the appropriate Product Group, type of System, Product name, Product machine type, and Operating system on IBM Support's Fix Central web page, at the following URL:

Workaround

Choose the node in the Chassis Management Module (CMM) menu and click on 'Restart System Mgmt Processor' in the 'Options for node [X]' box.

After discovery has completed, verify that the 'Lan over USB' interface is up in the operating system. If it is not, restart it.

For Linux, run 'ifdown usb0' then 'ifup usb0'.

For Windows, go into network properties and disable the USB interface, then enable it.

For VMware, run 'esxcli network nic down -n vusb0' then 'esxcli network nic up -n vusb0'.

If the update still fails, restart the operating system.
