ServeRAID M5000 Series and ServeRAID M1015 on System x3200 M3 and System x3250 M3 - IBM Servers

Problem

The ServeRAID M5000 Series SAS/SATA Controller firmware version 12.13.0-0153 and 12.13.0-0179-1, and IBM ServeRAID M1015 SATA/SAS Controller version 20.11.1-0137 can cause an IBM System x3200 M3 and a IBM System x3250 M3 to hang during boot. The ServeRAID M5000 Series SAS/SATA Controller firmware version 12.13.0-179-1 is not supported on the x3200 M3 and x3250 M3. The ServeRAID M1015 SAS/SATA Controller firmware version 20.11.1-0137 is not supported on the the x3200 M3 and x3250 M3.

Symptom

The ServeRAID M5000 Series SAS/SATA Controller firmware version 12.13.0-0153 and 12.13.0-0179-1, and IBM ServeRAID M1015 SATA/SAS Controller version 20.11.1-0137 can cause an IBM System x3200 M3 and a IBM System x3250 M3 to hang during boot.

The ServeRAID M5000 Series SAS/SATA Controller firmware version 12.13.0-179-1 is not supported on the x3200 M3 and x3250 M3.

The ServeRAID M1015 SAS/SATA Controller firmware version 20.11.1-0137 is not supported on the the x3200 M3 and x3250 M3.

Affected configurations

The system may be any of the following IBM servers:

  • System x3200 M3, type 7327, any model
  • System x3200 M3, type 7328, any model
  • System x3250 M3, type 4251, any model
  • System x3250 M3, type 4252, any model
  • System x3250 M3, type 4261, any model

The system is configured with one or more of the following IBM options:

  • ServeRAID M1015 SAS/SATA Controller, Option part number 46M0831, any replacement part number (CRU)
  • ServeRAID M5014 SAS/SATA Controller, Option part number 46M0916, any replacement part number (CRU)
  • ServeRAID M5015 SAS/SATA Controller, Option part number 46M0829, any replacement part number (CRU)
  • ServeRAID M5025 SAS/SATA Controller, Option part number 46M0830, any replacement part number (CRU)

This tip is not software specific.

The 12.13.0-0153 and 12.13.0-0179-1 firmware for the ServeRAID M5000 Series SAS/SATA Controller is affected.

The system has the symptom described above.

Solution

This behavior was corrected in ServeRAID M5000 Series SAS/SATA Controller firmware version 12.15.0-0199.

This behavior was corrected in ServeRAID M1000 Series SAS/SATA Controller firmware version 20.13.1-0200.

The file is available by selecting the appropriate Product Group, type of System, Product name, Product machine type, and operating system on IBM Support's Fix Central web page, at the following URL:

Workaround

If a x3200 M3 or x3250 M3 is running ServeRAID M5000 Series firmware 12.13.0-0153, or ServeRAID M1015 SAS/SATA firmware 20.11.1-0137, it must be flashed to the latest supported version.
