Troubleshooting
Problem
By design, switches enter Protect Mode when they are configured for Stacking. As a result of being in Protect Mode, the user is prevented from managing the switch using the Advanced Management Module (AMM) or Chassis Management Module (CMM). The following switch configuration settings cannot be set through the AMM or CMM: External Ports: Enabled/Disabled External management over all ports: Enabled/Disabled Restore Factory Defaults New Static IP Configuration Important Note: Before enabling StackingMode, the user should verify that the switches are configured with an externally reachable Internet Protocol Version 4 (IPv4) management address, and that a Telnet or Secure Shell (SSH) Command Line Interface (CLI) session can be opened to the switches. After stacking is enabled, users can manage the stack using the externally available IP address of the switch that became the Stack Master. Furthermore, the console cable is always an option for switch management.

Symptom
By design, switches enter Protect Mode when they are configured for Stacking. As a result of being in Protect Mode, the user is prevented from managing the switch using the Advanced Management Module (AMM) or Chassis Management Module (CMM). The following switch configuration settings cannot be set through the AMM or CMM:
- External Ports: Enabled/Disabled
- External management over all ports: Enabled/Disabled
- Restore Factory Defaults
- New Static IP Configuration
Important Note: Before enabling Stacking Mode, the user should verify that the switches are configured with an externally reachable Internet Protocol Version 4 (IPv4) management address, and that a Telnet or Secure Shell (SSH) Command Line Interface (CLI) session can be opened to the switches. After stacking is enabled, users can manage the stack using the externally available IP address of the switch that became the Stack Master.
Furthermore, the console cable is always an option for switch management.
Affected configurations
The system is configured with one or more of the following IBM options:
- BNT 1/10 Gigabit Uplink Ethernet Switch Module for IBM BladeCenter, option 44W4404, any replacement part number
- BNT Virtual Fabric 10 Gigabit Switch Module for IBM BladeCenter, option 46C7191, any replacement part number
- Cisco Catalyst Switch Module 3012 for IBM BladeCenter, option 43W4395, any replacement part number
- Cisco Catalyst Switch Module 3110G for IBM BladeCenter, option 41Y8523, any replacement part number
- Cisco Catalyst Switch Module 3110X for IBM BladeCenter, option 41Y8522, any replacement part number
- IBM Flex System Fabric EN4093 10 Gigabit Scalable Switch, any model
