Problem

In Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, and Windows Server 2012, if universal multichannel is enabled after installing the latest out-of-box Emulex Network Interface Card (NIC) driver, Windows assigns duplicate names to more than one interface causing management utilities, such as the Emulex NIC Teaming Manager, to function incorrectly. Specifically, the Emulex NIC Teaming manager will not properly create teams based on the interfaces selected. If universal multichannel is enabled before Windows is installed, the issue does not occur.

Symptom

In Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, and Windows Server 2012, if universal multichannel is enabled after installing the latest out-of-box Emulex Network Interface Card (NIC) driver, Windows assigns duplicate names to more than one interface causing management utilities, such as the Emulex NIC Teaming Manager, to function incorrectly.

Specifically, the Emulex NIC Teaming manager will not properly create teams based on the interfaces selected. If universal multichannel is enabled before Windows is installed, the issue does not occur.

Affected configurations

The system is configured with at least one of the following:

  • Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter, any service pack
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise, any service pack
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 Foundation, any service pack
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard, any service pack
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2012, any service pack

The system is configured with one or more of the following IBM Option part numbers:

  • Emulex 10 Gb Ethernet Integrated Virtual Fabric Adapter II for IBM System x, L1 49Y7940, any replacement part number
  • Emulex 10 Gb Ethernet Integrated Virtual Fabric Adapter III for IBM System x, Option part number 95Y3768, any replacement part number

The Emulex device driver for the Emulex NIC is affected.
