Troubleshooting
Problem
Broadcom firmware 2.1.9b installed on any Broadcom 10 Gb Ethernet Expansion Card (CFFh) for IBM BladeCenter, and IBM BladeCenter HS23 blades running Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) firmware between levels 1.30 and 1.32 will cause the blade to hang at the UEFI Splash screen prior to presenting F1 Settings screen. << UEFI_SPLASH.jpg >> Note: Only HS23 and HS23E blade servers are affected.

RETAIN tip: H21349
Symptom
Broadcom firmware 2.1.9b installed on any Broadcom 10 Gb Ethernet Expansion Card (CFFh) for IBM BladeCenter, and IBM BladeCenter HS23 blades running Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) firmware between levels 1.30 and 1.32 will cause the blade to hang at the UEFI Splash screen prior to presenting F1 Settings screen.

Note: Only HS23 and HS23E blade servers are affected.
Affected configurations
The system may be any of the following IBM servers:
- BladeCenter HS23, type 1929, any model
- BladeCenter HS23, type 7875, any model
- BladeCenter HS23E, type 8038, any model
- BladeCenter HS23E, type 8039, any model
The system is configured with one or more of the following IBM Options:
- Broadcom 10 Gb Dual-Port Ethernet Expansion Card (CFFh) for IBM BladeCenter, Option part number 44W4466, any replacement part number (CRU)
- Broadcom 10 GB Quad-Port Ethernet Expansion Card (CFFh) for IBM BladeCenter, Option part number 44W4465, any replacement part number (CRU)
- Broadcom 10 GB Gen2 Dual-Port Ethernet Expansion Card (CFFh) for BladeCenter, Option part number 46M6168, any replacement part number (CRU)
- Broadcom 10 GB Gen2 Quad-Port Ethernet Expansion Card (CFFh) for IBM BladeCenter, Option part number 46M6164, any replacement part number (CRU)
This tip is not software specific.
The following system BIOS or UEFI level(s) are affected:
- UEFI release level 1.30
- UEFI release level 1.32
The Firmware version 2.1.9b firmware for the Broadcom 10 GB Ethernet Expansion Card (CFFh) is affected.
Solution
The issue is fixed in Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) firmware version 1.40.
The file is available by selecting the appropriate Product Group, type of System, Product name, Product machine type, and Operating system on IBM Support's Fix Central web page, at the following URL:
Workaround
In order to work around the issue, follow the procedure listed below:
- Power down the system. The next step must be executed while the blade server is in OFF state.
- Through the Advanced Management Module (AMM) interface, update blade Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) code to version 1.20. This procedure will down level blade UEFI code allowing for the blade server to start up normally.
- Using the preferred method update Broadcom 10 Gb Compact Form Factor Horizontal (CFFh) to version 2.1.8e. This will down level the firmware for Broadcom 10 Gb CFFh.
- Using the preferred method update system UEFI code to version 1.32, or later.
