Problem

The listed hard disk drives can be exposed to a data loss issue. Any firmware level earlier than A3C4 is affected. The Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) controller logging could indicate 04/44 messages.

This tip is not software specific.

Any firmware level earlier than A3C4 is affected.

The system has the symptom described above.

Solution

This behavior has been corrected in the A3C4 hard drive firmware release. The firmware will be included in IBM SAS hard drive update program 1.12.01 and later levels.

Additional Information

A subset of optional IBM hard drives shipped between April 2010 and January 2013 running firmware levels A3C2, A3C0, A3BE, or A3B8 can be exposed to a possible undetected data loss or data error during a proximal write.

(The "proximal write" feature does a skip operation on the data transfer from DRAM to disk to improve performance.) This issue occurs when the starting Logical Block Address (LBA) is a reassigned LBA.

A firmware update designed to address this issue is now available. IBM strongly recommends application of this update as soon as possible.
