Source
RETAIN tip: H206662
Symptom
For the affected systems, users are unable to start from the Universal Serial Bus (USB) key with a Bootable Media Creator (BoMC) image using Integrated Management Module II (IMM2) virtual media with Remote Control.
Affected configurations
The system may be any of the following IBM servers:
- System x3100 M4, type 2582, any model
- System x3250 M4, type 2583, any model
This tip is not software specific.
This tip is not option specific.
The following system BIOS or UEFI level(s) are affected:
- JQE150A or prior
Solution
This behavior will be corrected in a future release of Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) firmware.
The target date for this release is scheduled for fourth quarter 2012.
The file is or will be available by selecting the appropriate Product Group, type of System, Product name, Product machine type, and Operating system on IBM Support's Fix Central web page, at the following URL:
Workaround
- Use Preboot eXecution Environment (PXE) or a CD start with a BoMC image to update all firmware.
- Update all firmware by logging in Integrated Management Module
(IMM) web or using the Operating System (OS).
Additional information
Dynamic System Analysis (DSA), the Remote drive USB Vendor ID ('0x4b3'), and the Product ID ('0x4012') are the values that need to be synchronized with the Integrated Management Module (IMM) team.
Users need IMM's investigation and clarification that using the duplicated ID is the correct mechanism for starting a remotely mounted USB key.
Due to the duplicated ID, UEFI has no way to identify which one (1) is the DSA or remote drive.
