RETAIN tip: H206348
Symptom
Users will get a 'Cannot Save Network Settings' error message the first time after resetting Integrated Management Module II (IMM2) to the default settings, if they try to switch the IMM2 network interface port from 'dedicated mode' to 'shared mode' and modify some network settings (Internet Protocol (IP) or netmask) in the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) menu.
Affected configurations
The system may be any of the following IBM servers:
- System x3500 M4, type 7383, any model
- System x3550 M4, type 7914, any model
- System x3650 M4, type 7915, any model
This tip is not software specific.
This tip is not option specific.
The following system firmware level(s) are affected:
- IMM2 firmware v1.26 - v1.50
The system has the symptom described above.
Solution
Update IMM2 Firmware to v1.97(36R) or later version could fix the fail symptom.
The file is available by selecting the appropriate Product Group, type of System, Product name, Product machine type, and operating system on IBM Support's Fix Central web page, at the following URL:

Workaround
Users can ignore the error message and wait for approximately two (2) minutes. After that, the network function will be changed successfully to 'share mode.'
Additional information
This issue occurs because the Network Communication Services Interface (NCSI) channel discovery takes approximately 33 seconds to finish the discovery process. As a result, users get the error message from the UEFI menu when the share mode interface is being activated.
Users can ignore the message and wait for several minutes. In that time, the settings will be adjusted and this condition will not reoccur until they reset IMM2 to default.
