Troubleshooting
Problem
Full Initialization of the Virtual Drive (VD) will fail when creating a RAID-0 consisting of a single hard drive or a RAID-1 consisting of two (2) hard drive using WebBIOS, MegaRAID Command Line Interface (MegaCLI), or the MegaRAID Storage Manager (MSM)utilities while Data Protection Information (PI) setting is enabled. The adapter event log will show the following errors: Controller ID: 0 Initialization failed on VD Controller ID: 0 VD is now OFFLINE VD

Affected configurations
The system may be any of the following IBM servers:
- System x3500 M4, type 7383, any model
- System x3530 M4, type 7160, any model
- System x3550 M3, type 4254, any model
- System x3550 M3, type 7944, any model
- System x3550 M4, type 7914, any model
- System x3650 M3, type 4255, any model
- System x3650 M3, type 7945, any model
- System x3650 M4, type 7915, any model
- System x3750 M4, type 8722, any model
- System x3750 M4, type 8733, any model
The system is configured with one or more of the following IBM Option part numbers:
- ServeRAID M5016 SAS/SATA Controller for IBM System x, Option part number 90Y4304, any replacement part number
- ServeRAID M5110 SAS/SATA Controller for IBM System x (CTO), any replacement part number
- ServeRAID M5110e SAS/SATA Controller for IBM System x, onboard, any embedded
This tip is not software specific.
The IBM System x ST model hard drive firmware for the SAS drives is affected.
Solution
This behavior will be corrected in the future release of IBM Online SAS/SATA Hard Drive Update tool version 1.12 or later.
The target date for this release is scheduled for fourth quarter 2012.
The file is or will be available by selecting the appropriate Product Group, type of System, Product name, Product machine type, and Operating system on IBM Support's Fix Central web page, at the following URL:
Workaround
In order to successfully create a new Virtual Drive (VD) while the PI setting is enabled make sure to use "no initialization" or the "fast initialization" option.
To workaround the failed initialization of the Virtual Drive follow the steps below:
- Delete the Virtual Drive which has been set to the Offline state. This will change the state of the hard drive to the Unconfigured Bad state.
- Change the drive status from Unconfigured Bad to Unconfigured Good.
- Create a new Virtual Drive with the Data Protection Enabled (PI) and choose initialization method to "No Initialization" or to "Fast Initialization".
The instructions on how to manage storage storage configurations are illustrated in ServeRAID-M Software User's Guide and ServeRAID MegaCLI User's Guide which can be found by selecting the appropriate Product Group, type of System, Product name, Product machine type, and operating system on IBM Support's Fix Central web page, at the following URLs:
Additional information
PI formatted hard drive are formatted physically to 520 byte sectors that store 512 bytes of user data with 8 bytes of PI appended to it.
The PI setting can be managed within the WebBIOS, MegaCLI, or MSM utilities.
