Problem

UpdateXpress System Pack Installer (UXSPI) cannot detect the Brocade adapter's firmware and Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) version on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 Update 8 and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 2 (SLES 11 SP2). The installed version is shown as 'undetected.' UXSPI version 9.21 and earlier versions are affected.

Symptom

UpdateXpress System Pack Installer (UXSPI) cannot detect the Brocade adapter's firmware and Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) version on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 Update 8 and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 2 (SLES 11 SP2).

The installed version is shown as 'undetected.'

UXSPI version 9.21 and earlier versions are affected.

Affected Configurations

The system can be any of the following IBM servers:

  • System x3330 M4, type 7382, any model
  • System x3500 M4, type 7383, any model
  • System x3530 M4, type 7160, any model
  • System x3550 M4, type 7914, any model
  • System x3630 M4, type 7158, any model
  • System x3650 M4, type 7915, any model
  • System x3690 X5, type 7147, any model
  • System x3690 X5, type 7148, any model
  • System x3690 X5, type 7149, any model
  • System x3690 X5, type 7192, any model
  • System x3850 X5, type 7143, any model
  • System x3850 X5, type 7145, any model
  • System x3850 X5, type 7146, any model
  • System x3850 X5, type 7191, any model
  • System x3950 X5, type 7143, any model
  • System x3950 X5, type 7145, any model

The system is configured with at least one of the following items:

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5, Update 8
  • SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11, Service Pack 2
  • UpdateXpress Service Pack Installer, version 9.20

The system is configured with one or more of the following IBM options:

  • Brocade 10 Gigabit Converged Network Adapter for IBM System x, option part number 42C1820, replacement part number 42C1822
  • Brocade 10 Gigabit Ethernet Dual-Port Converged Network Adapter for IBM BladeCenter, option part number 81Y1650, replacement part number 81Y1654
  • Brocade 4 Gigabit Fibre Channel Dual-Port Host Bus Adapter for IBM System x, option part number 59Y1993, replacement part number 59Y1998
  • Brocade 4 Gigabit Fibre Channel Single-Port Host Bus Adapter for IBM System x, option part number 59Y1987, replacement part number 59Y1992
  • Brocade 8 Gigabit Fibre Channel Dual-Port Host Bus Adapter for IBM System x, option part number 46M6050, replacement part number 46M6062
  • Brocade 8 Gigabit Fibre Channel Single-Port Host Bus Adapter for IBM System x, option part number 46M6049, replacement part number 46M6061

The UXSPI version 9.21 and earlier versions are affected.

The system has the symptom described above.

Solution

This behavior has been corrected in UXSPI 9.30.

The file is available by selecting the appropriate Product Group, type of System, Product name, Product machine type, and Operating system on IBM Support's Fix Central web page, at the following URL:

Workaround

After the driver is released officially for IBM systems, users can use the following command to obtain the Brocade firmware and BIOS information:

bcu adapter --query 1

Additional Information

This limitation can be resolved after UXSPI picks up the later release of the Brocade Common Information Model (CIM) provider, which supports both Red Hat Enterprise Linus 5.8 and SLES 11 SP2.
