Slot information in DSA PCI Information --> Device of the Option Card shows 'on-board' when the option card is plugged in a slot - IBM System x3250 M4 (2583)

Troubleshooting

Problem

When running Dynamic System Analysis (DSA) starts in Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) mode in Microsoft Windows, the slot information of the option card shows 'on-board,' even though the option card is plugged in the slot, not on-board. DSA displays the Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) slot ID information correctly if Microsoft Windows starts in legacy mode, but not in UEFI mode.

Resolving The Problem

Symptom

When running Dynamic System Analysis (DSA) starts in Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) mode in Microsoft Windows, the slot information of the option card shows 'on-board,' even though the option card is plugged in the slot, not on-board.

DSA displays the Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) slot ID information correctly if Microsoft Windows starts in legacy mode, but not in UEFI mode.

Affected Configurations

The system can be any of the following IBM servers:

  • System x3250 M4, type 2583, any model

The system is configured with at least one of the following items:

  • IBM Dynamic System Analysis (DSA) 4.00, any edition
  • Microsoft Windows 2003 Server, any service pack
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter, any service pack
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise, any service pack
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 Foundation, any service pack
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard, any service pack
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2008, Datacenter 32-bit, any service pack
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2008, Datacenter 64-bit, any service pack
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2008, Enterprise 32-bit, any service pack
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2008, Enterprise 64-bit, any service pack
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2008, Standard 32-bit, any service pack
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2008, Standard 64-bit, any service pack
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2012, any service pack

This tip is not option specific.

The system has the symptom described above.

Note: This does not imply that the network operating system will work under all combinations of hardware and software.

Solution

This behavior has been corrected in a DSA firmware.

The file is available by selecting the appropriate Product group, type of System, Product name, Product machine type, and Operating system on IBM Support's Fix Central web page, at the following URL:

Workaround

In UEFI start under Microsoft Windows (such as Windows 2008), users can find the option card associated with the slot using the Windows Device Manager tool

  1. Open Device Manager
  2. Select Find
  3. Double-click the option device name
  4. Select Show Slot ID and bus/device/function number.

Additional Information

In UEFI start under Windows, DSA fails to fetch PCI device configuration space to obtain the slot bus range using the Microsoft Windows Application Program Interface (API) or the DSA Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) library.

This behavior is different than the legacy start under Microsoft Windows, in which DSA obtains the slot bus range successfully.
