IMM web interface displays an error message during the system start into operating system - IBM System x3530 M4, x3630 M4

Troubleshooting

Problem

There is not enough shadow Random Access Memory (RAM) space for the PCI Device Option ROM (OPROM) to initialize. Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) will inform Integrated Management Module II (IMM2) to show the error message in the IMM2 SystemEvent Log (SEL) and web interface. The IMM2 SEL shows the correct error message, but the IMM2 web interface shows unexpected characters in the diagnostic window. The unexpected characters in the diagnostic window will look like this: [I.2018002] The device found at Bus ¾Ᾱ device ¾Ᾱ Function ¾Ᾱ could not be configured due to resource constraints. The Vendor ID for the device OS ¾Ᾱ and the Device ID is ¾Ᾱ.

Resolving The Problem

RETAIN tip: H205946

Symptom

There is not enough shadow Random Access Memory (RAM) space for the PCI Device Option ROM (OPROM) to initialize.
Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) will inform Integrated Management Module II (IMM2) to show the error message in the IMM2 System Event Log (SEL) and web interface. The IMM2 SEL shows the correct error message, but the IMM2 web interface shows unexpected characters in the diagnostic window.
The unexpected characters in the diagnostic window will look like this:

[I.2018002] The device found at Bus ¾Ᾱ device ¾Ᾱ Function ¾Ᾱ could not be configured due to resource constraints. The Vendor ID for the device OS ¾Ᾱ and the Device ID is ¾Ᾱ.

Affected Configurations

The system can be any of the following IBM servers:

  • System x3530 M4, type 7160, any model
  • System x3630 M4, type 7158, any model

This tip is not software specific.

This tip is not option specific.

The following system firmware level is affected:

  • Integrated Management Module II (IMM2) firmware version 1.32

The system has the symptom described above.

Solution

This behavior was corrected in the third quarter 2012 release of IMM2 firmware.

The file is available by selecting the appropriate Product group, System, Product name, Product machine type, and Operating system on IBM Support's Fix Central web page, at the following URL:

Workaround

Check the error message in the IMM2 SEL and IMM2 web interface to confirm which slot number caused OPROM to fail to initialize.

Additional Information

This issue is caused by a communication failure between UEFI and IMM2. There is no user impact because users will not know which BUS/DEV/FUNC in PCI BUS.

The IMM2 release fixed the unexpected characters displayed in the diagnostic window.
