Physical Check
To qualify if a hard disk drive is applicable for this ECA, check the following conditions are met:
- The system has been configured with one or more of the following IBM Options:
- 300 GB 10,000 RPM 6 Gbps SAS 2.5-inch SFF Hot-Swap HDD, Option 42D0612, CRU 42D0613
- 300 GB 10,000 RPM 6 Gbps SAS 2.5-inch SFF SS HDD, Option 49Y1991, CRU 49Y1992
- 300 GB 10,000 RPM 6 Gbps SAS 2.5-inch SFF Slim Hot-Swap HDD, Option 42D0637, CRU 42D0638
- 300 GB 10,000 RPM 6 Gbps SAS 2.5-inch SFF Slim Non Hot-Swap HDD, Option 42D0627, CRU 42D0628
- 300 GB 10,000 RPM 6 Gbps SAS 2.5-inch SFF Slim Hot-Swap HDD, Option 44W2193, CRU 42D0638

- 900 GB 10,000 RPM 6 SAS 2.5-inch SFF Slim Hot-Swap HDD, Option 81Y9654, CRU 81Y965
- The 11S barcode of the Option HDD assembly needs to contain the correct base drive. For the 300 GB Options the base drive is 49Y7424, for the 600 GB Options, the base drive is 49Y7426, and for the 900 GB Options, the base drive is 49Y7427.

- Once the two (2) criteria above have been confirmed, the next step would be to check the serial number of the suspect units(s) to verify if it is contained in the affected serial number range. The affected serial number listing is available with RETAIN tip H205434 in support of MIGR-5089882.
http://www.ibm.com/support/entry/portal/docdisplay?lndocid=migr-5089882
Additional means to identify affected units:
- DOM (Date of Manufacture) on the external Option box labelis between January 13, 2012 and April 12, 2012.
- The Option box contains an (11S) statement:
- For the 300 GB Options:
If the first 7-digits following the 11s are 49Y7424 - For the 600 GB Options:
If the first 7-digits following the 11s are 49Y7426 - For the 900 GB Options:
If the first 7-digits following the 11s are 49Y7427
- For the 300 GB Options:
- If the Options box has a "Contains Merchandise from statement containing the word "China" or "Origin: CN" those Option boxes serial numbers should be checked against the affected serial number listing.

Below is an example picture of a 2.5-inch 600 GB 6 Gb 10k SAS hard disk drive. The disk is from the affected manufacturer and contains the correct base drive (for instance, 49Y7424, 49Y7426, or 49Y7427), the serial number is contained in the affected serial number range, and the manufacturing date falls within 2012-01-13 and 2012-04-12.

Symptom
Multiple 03/11 errors could be exhibited in the operating system and Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) controller logs. Multiple failed read operations will proceed the disk being rendered inoperable.
Prerequisites
None.
Companion
None.
Concurrent
None.
Additional information
An IBM vendor manufacturing issue will lead to early life head failures on the 300 GB 10K 6 Gb SAS and 600 GB 10K 6Gb SAS hard disk drives.
Solution
HDD drives determined to be in the applicable serial number range need to be replaced. Reference RETAIN tip H205434 for the complete IBM support action plan.
Customer Replacement Units (CRU) can be obtained by contacting 800-IBM-SERV and referencing RETAIN tip H205434. The hard disk drive CRU numbers are:
