Troubleshooting


Problem

In an IBM BladeCenter HS23 server, the user may get an authentication failure message while using Advanced Settings Utility (ASU) or UpdateXpress Service Pack Installer (UXSPI) to communicate with Integrated Management Module v2 (IMMv2) through Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) over Local Area Network (LAN) in-band interface. This behavior is intermittent.

Symptom

In an IBM BladeCenter HS23 server, the user may get an authentication failure message while using Advanced Settings Utility (ASU) or UpdateXpress Service Pack Installer (UXSPI) to communicate with Integrated Management Module v2 (IMMv2) through Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) over Local Area Network (LAN) in-band interface. This behavior is intermittent.

Affected configurations

The system may be any of the following IBM servers:

  • BladeCenter HS23, type 7875, any model

The system is configured with at least one of the following:

  • Advanced Settings Utility, any version
  • UpdateXpress Service Pack Installer, any version

This tip is not option specific.

The system has the symptom described above.

Solution

This behavior is corrected Integrated Management Module II (IMM2) firmware version 1AOO30W (1.50).

The file is available by selecting the appropriate product group, System, Product name, Product machine type, and operating system on IBM Support's Fix Central web page, at the following URL:

Workaround

Run the affected tools again.

Additional information

The authentication component of the IPMI stack running in IMMv2 has an issue. Due to a software defect, logging in can be rejected temporarily when the correct user name and password pair are provided. The user gets an error message while updating firmware using UXSPI, such as the following:

  Unable to validate userid/password on IMM
