When the IBM High Input/Output Per Second (IOPS) Solid State Storage PCIe Adapter is first powered on, the red Light Emitting Diode (LED) located on the PCI bracket will illuminate and will stay solidly lit. Note: The red LED is amber color on the newerIBM High IOPS adapters.

Symptom

When the IBM High Input/Output Per Second (IOPS) Solid State Storage PCIe Adapter is first powered on, the red Light Emitting Diode (LED) located on the PCI bracket will illuminate and will stay solidly lit.

Note: The red LED is amber color on the newer IBM High IOPS adapters.

This tip is not software specific.

The ibm_dd_highiop_ssd-2.2.3 firmware for the High IOPS SSD PCIe adapter is affected.

Solution

This behavior will be corrected in a future release of High IOPS Solid-State Drive (SSD) PCIe adapter Driver and Utilities scheduled for third quarter of 2012.

The file is or will be available by selecting the appropriate Product group, System, Product name, Product machine type, and operating system on IBM Support's Fix Central web page, at the following URL:

Workaround

There are two scenarios which could cause the red or amber LED to stay lit.

Scenario 1

The red or amber LED will turn off once the High IOPS driver software loads successfully. If the driver is not set to load, or does not load properly, then the LED will not turn off.

In that case, reinstallation of the High IOPS software may be necessary. Remove any previously installed High IOPS software packages, reboot, and then install again. See the IBM High IOPS SS Class SSD PCIe Adapter Linux or Microsoft Windows User's Guides for detailed instructions on how this can be accomplished.

Scenario 2

In rare and infrequent cases, the red or amber LED will stay on even after the High IOPS driver is loaded and the High IOPS device is attached to the operating system. In this case, update the High IOPS software to version 2.3.1 or greater. See the Fix section for details.

Additional information

There is an LED controller on the IBM High IOPS Duo adapter that is accessed over an I2C bus. The LED controller performs any blinking or power control of the LEDs. Each ioDIMM on the Duo can issue commands to the LED controller and there is a switch to arbitrate access to it. Sometimes, there can be contention and the command can be dropped.
