Problem
Batteries have to be replaced after a few years. Do not mix old and new batteries. This includes all the internal Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) batteries and the batteries in any UPS 3U Online Battery Packs that are connected. For example, if all of the UPS and extended run batteries are three years old and one fails, replace all of them.

Symptom
Batteries have to be replaced after a few years. Do not mix old and new batteries. This includes all the internal Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) batteries and the batteries in any UPS 3U Online Battery Packs that are connected.
For example, if all of the UPS and extended run batteries are three years old and one fails, replace all of them.
Affected configurations
The system is configured with one or more of the following IBM Options:
- IBM 5000 UPS, type 2419, any model
- IBM 5000VA HV UPS, Option part number 24195KX, any replacement part number
- UPS 3U Online Battery Pack, Option part number 39Y8857 (replaces 25R5582), replacement part number (CRU) 39Y8863

Additional information
The battery packs are connected in parallel inside the UPS. If a new battery is used with an old battery (below 95 volts) the new battery will supply charging current to the old battery.
This current can be large and cause heating of the connecting wires. A hot smell may be noticed.
