Problem

A number of IBM-labeled 1.5 V memory options and Field Replaceable Units (FRUs) may contain Dual In-Line Memory Modules (DIMMs) that have been qualified by IBM to operate at 1.35 V or 1.5 V. All DIMMs capable of 1.35 V operation are marked with the industry designator "PC3L", for example "PC3L-10600" for a DDR3-1333Mhz DIMM. IBM-labeled PC3L DIMMs operate at 1.5 V when placed in a system that operates DIMMs only at 1.5 V, or when mixed with 1.5 V DIMMs. This is a supported configuration. There is nodifference in function or performance between 1.5 V DIMMs and 1.35 V DIMMs running at 1.5 V in the same system. However, only the same type, same capacity, and same technology of Registered DIMMs (RDIMMs) or Unregistered DIMMs (UDIMMs) can be mixed. Forexample: a. 4 GB 2Rx4 1.35V RDIMMs can be mixed with 4 GB 2Rx4 1.5 V RDIMMs b. 2 GB 1Rx8 1.35V UDIMMs can be mixed with 2 GB 1Rx8 1.5 V UDIMMs

Symptom

A number of IBM-labeled 1.5 V memory options and Field Replaceable Units (FRUs) may contain Dual In-Line Memory Modules (DIMMs) that have been qualified by IBM to operate at 1.35 V or 1.5 V.

All DIMMs capable of 1.35 V operation are marked with the industry designator "PC3L", for example "PC3L-10600" for a DDR3-1333Mhz DIMM.

IBM-labeled PC3L DIMMs operate at 1.5 V when placed in a system that operates DIMMs only at 1.5 V, or when mixed with 1.5 V DIMMs. This is a supported configuration.

There is no difference in function or performance between 1.5 V DIMMs and 1.35 V DIMMs running at 1.5 V in the same system.

However, only the same type, same capacity, and same technology of Registered DIMMs (RDIMMs) or Unregistered DIMMs (UDIMMs) can be mixed. For example:

 

a. 4 GB 2Rx4 1.35V RDIMMs can be mixed with 4 GB 2Rx4 1.5 V RDIMMs

b. 2 GB 1Rx8 1.35V UDIMMs can be mixed with 2 GB 1Rx8 1.5 V UDIMMs
