USB0 down in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.X after IMM reset - IBM System

Troubleshooting

Problem

After resetting Integrated Management Module (IMM), the user cannot ping the internal IMM Internet Protocol (IP) address 169.254.95.118 or 169.254.95.120. This behavior is seen with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5, update 5 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5, update 6

Resolving The Problem

RETAIN tip: H202759

Symptom

After resetting Integrated Management Module (IMM), the user cannot ping the internal IMM Internet Protocol (IP) address 169.254.95.118 or 169.254.95.120.

This behavior is seen with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5, update 5 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5, update 6

Affected configurations

The system may be any of the following IBM servers:

  • System x3850 X5, type 7143, any model
  • System x3850 X5, type 7145, any model
  • System x3850 X5, type 7146, any model
  • System x3850 X5, type 7191, any model
  • System x3950 X5, type 7145, any model

The system is configured with at least one of the following:

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 Update 5, Update 6

The system is configured with one or more of the following IBM Options:

  • Integrated Management Module (IMM)

Note: This does not imply that the network operating system will work under all combinations of hardware and software.

Please see the compatibility page for more information: http://www.ibm.com/systems/info/x86servers/serverproven/compat/us/

Workaround

  1. Go to Network setting in host Operating System (OS), find USB0 interface, try activating it.

  2. Disable and then re-enable the Local Area Network (LAN) over Universal Serial Bus (USB), this will trigger the re-activation of the USB0 interface on the host.

  3. Try in-band flashing of IMM firmware or extract the config script file, e.g. :

      ./ibm_fw_imm_yuoo91f-1.25_linux_32-64.bin -x temp
    ./temp/cdc_interface.sh
This script will reconfigure the USB0 interface.

Additional information

When IMM is reset, the OS USB0 interface is deactivated. After IMM reboots and loads the driver again, the USB0 interface is ready in OS. Red Hat Linux host does not activate the USB0 interface, because IMM's Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is not ready and Red Hat does not retry the interface activation.

This issue is not seen with SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) 11.
