Problem

When a blade attempts to boot UpdateXpress Service Pack Installer (UXSPI) from a Universal Serial Bus (USB) key that is mounted remotely via remote control (either through the Advanced Management Module or the stand alone remote control application), itmay take a long time (over 30 minutes) to boot. When booting UXSPI from a remotely mounted CD-ROM, the procedure only takes a few minutes.

Symptom

When a blade attempts to boot UpdateXpress Service Pack Installer (UXSPi) from a Universal Serial Bus (USB) key that is mounted remotely via remote control (either through the Advanced Management Module or the stand alone remote control application), it may take a long time (over 30 minutes) to boot.

When booting UXSPi from a remotely mounted CD-ROM, the procedure only takes a few minutes.

Affected configurations

The system may be any of the following IBM servers:

  • BladeCenter H, type 7989, any model
  • BladeCenter H, type 8852, any model
  • BladeCenter HS12, type 1916, any model
  • BladeCenter HS12, type 8014, any model
  • BladeCenter HS12, type 8028, any model
  • BladeCenter HS21 XM, type 1915, any model
  • BladeCenter HS21 XM, type 7995, any model
  • BladeCenter HS21, type 1885, any model
  • BladeCenter HS21, type 8853, any model
  • BladeCenter HS22, type 1936, any model
  • BladeCenter HS22, type 7870, any model
  • BladeCenter HS22V, type 1949, any model
  • BladeCenter HS22V, type 7871, any model
  • BladeCenter HX5, type 7872, any model
  • BladeCenter LS20, type 8850, any model
  • BladeCenter LS21, type 7971, any model
  • BladeCenter LS22, type 7901, any model
  • BladeCenter LS41, type 7972, any model
  • BladeCenter LS42, type 7902, any model
  • BladeCenter S, type 1948, any model
  • BladeCenter S, type 7779, any model
  • BladeCenter S, type 8886, any model

The system is configured with at least one of the following:

  • IBM Dynamic System Analysis (DSA) Preboot 3.20, any edition

This tip is not option specific.

Solution

IBM is still investigating this issue.

Workaround

Use the CD-ROM to remote boot the blade when running UXSPi.
