Problem

After applying Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) Build 50A or 50B, the system hangs at the "System Initializing" screen during Power On Self Test (POST).

Symptom

After applying Unifid Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) Build 50A or 50B, the system hangs at the "System Initializing" screen during Power On Self Test (POST).

Affected configurations

The system may be any of the following IBM servers:

  • BladeCenter HS22, type 1936, any model
  • BladeCenter HS22, type 7870, any model
  • System x3400 M2, type 7836, any model
  • System x3400 M2, type 7837, any model
  • System x3400 M3, type 7378, any model
  • System x3400 M3, type 7379, any model
  • System x3500 M2, type 7839, any model
  • System x3550 M2, type 4198, any model
  • System x3550 M2, type 7946, any model
  • System x3550 M3, Type 4254, any model
  • System x3550 M3, Type 7944, any model
  • System x3650 M2, type 4199, any model
  • System x3650 M2, type 7947, any model
  • iDataPlex dx360 M2 Server, type 6380, any model
  • iDataPlex dx360 M2 Server, type 7321, any model
  • iDataPlex dx360 M2 Server, type 7323, any model
  • iDataPlex dx360 M3 Server, type 6391, any model

The following system BIOS or UEFI level(s) are affected:

  • D6E126A thru D6E131B and D6E150A and D6E150B

Solution

This behavior has been corrected in the following UEFI versions:

  • dx360M2/dx360M3 - version 1.14 and higher
  • HS22 - version 1.12 and higher
  • x3400M2/x3400M3 - version 1.08 and higher
  • x3550M2/M3 x3650M2/M3 - version 1.11 (D6E150C) and higher

The firmware is available by selecting the appropriate Product Group, Product name, Product machine type, and Operating system on IBM Support's Fix Central web page, at the following URL:

Workaround

For a system in the hung state:

  1. Boot to backup UEFI image.
  2. Flash UEFI to the latest version.
  3. Boot to the primary UEFI image.

If the system fails to complete POST when booting from the backup UEFI page, contact IBM support.

Additional information

Updating the system to Build 50A or 50B from the following UEFI versions will cause the system to hang at the System Initializing screen:

  • BladeCenter HS22, Type 1936
  • BladeCenter HS22, Type 7870

Versions 1.03 (26B) and 1.04 (30B)

  • iDataPlex dx360 M2 Server, type 6380
  • iDataPlex dx360 M2 Server, type 7321
  • iDataPlex dx360 M2 Server, type 7323

Version 1.02 (26A), 1.03 (27B),or 1.04 (30A)

  • System x3400 M2, type 7836
  • System x3400 M2, type 7837
  • System x3500 M2, type 7839

Versions 1.01 (29A,29B,30A)

  • System x3550 M2, type 7946
  • System x3650 M2, type 7947

Versions 1.02 (26A), 1.03(28A), or 1.04 (31A/31B)
