Problem
When updating the device driver and firmware under Microsoft Windows 2003 R2 operating system using UpdateXpress Service Pack Installer (UXSPI), the OSA Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) driver is installed. A manual installation of the following IPMI driver package may also succeed: osa_dd_ipmi_jap409a_winsrvr_32-64 v2.2.1.2 However, in Windows 2003 R2 the native Microsoft IPMI drivers have to be manually installed. The system may experience the same behavior when using ServerGuide on Windows 2003 R2 because ServerGuide uses the same UXSPI for device driver and firmware updates.

Symptom
When updating the device driver and firmware under Microsoft Windows 2003 R2 operating system using UpdateXpress Service Pack Installer (UXSPI), the OSA Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) driver is installed.
A manual installation of the following IPMI driver package may also succeed:
- osa_dd_ipmi_jap409a_winsrvr_32-64 v2.2.1.2
However, in Windows 2003 R2 the native Microsoft IPMI drivers have to be manually installed.
The system may experience the same behavior when using ServerGuide on Windows 2003 R2 because ServerGuide uses the same UXSPI for device driver and firmware updates.
Affected configurations
The system is configured with at least one of the following:
- Microsoft Windows 2003 Server R2 for 32-bit Servers, any Service Pack
- Microsoft Windows 2003 Server R2 for 64-bit Servers, any Service Pack
- Microsoft Windows 2003 Server R2, Datacenter Edition, any Service Pack
- Microsoft Windows 2003 Server R2, Datacenter x64 Edition, any Service Pack
- Microsoft Windows 2003 Server R2, EE x64, any Service Pack
- Microsoft Windows 2003 Server R2, x64 Edition, any Service Pack

Solution
This issue has been corrected in the OSA IPMI Driver package osa_dd_ipmi_jap410a_winsrvr_32-64 (v2.2.1.2).
Note: This driver package cannot be installed in Windows 2003 R2 anymore.

Workaround
If the Avocent / OSA IPMI driver was already installed via UXSPI, ServerGuide, or manual install, then follow remove the driver and the IBM Mapping Layer for OSA IPMI by following the below instructions:
- Select "Start", "Settings", "Control Panel", "Add or Remove Programs".
- Select the entry "IBM_msi_server" or "IPMI Driver" (depending on the version you have installed) and click the Remove button. The Add or Remove Programs utility will prompt you to restart the system to complete the driver removal process.
The IBM Mapping Layer for OSA IPMI drivers can be removed as follows:
- Run the IBM Mapping Layer package with parameters as shown below, where XX is the current version of the package

Reboot the host server after the drivers have been removed.
The OSA IPMI Driver and OSA IPMI Mapping Layer are needed for Windows 2003 and Windows 2003 with Service Pack 1 (SP1) and Service Pack 2 (SP2).
Starting with Windows 2003 R2, Microsoft provides the IPMI driver in the Installation CD. The device driver should be installed from the installation disc using the following instructions:
- Click "Start", "Control Panel", "Add/Remove Programs".
- Click Add/Remove Windows Components.
- From the component list, select "Management and Monitoring Tools", and then click "Details".
- Select "Hardware Management".
- Click "Next". The installation wizard opens and guides you through the installation. The Windows Server 2003 R2 installation disk is required.
To verify that the Microsoft IPMI device driver is installed, complete the following steps:
- Click "Start", "Control Panel", "System".
- Click the "Hardware" tab.
- Click "Device Manager".
- Click "View", "Show Hidden Devices".
- Expand System devices.
- If the Microsoft IPMI device driver is installed correctly, a device named Microsoft Generic IPMI Compliant Device is displayed under System devices. For a multi-node configuration, a device named Microsoft Generic IPMI Compliant Device is created for each node.
Note: For an IBM System x3950 M2 server (multi-node configuration), the Microsoft IPMI device driver is the only supported IPMI driver.
Additional information
The Avocent / OSA IPMI driver is a dual layer driver. It has a base driver and the mapping layer exposes the IPMI content as per the IPMI standard.
The Microsoft driver, on the other hand, is monolithic and has no need of the mapping layer. The two drivers are mutually exclusive. The choice is to use the Microsoft single driver on Windows 2003 R2 onwards.
However when using IBM Director or IBM Systems Director the IBM Mapping Layer for OSA IPMI may be still required.
