Installation of GPU cards cause screw hole misalignment - IBM iDataPlex dx360 M3 Server (Type 6391)

Troubleshooting

Problem

When replacing or installing a double-wide NVIDIA Tesla M1060 GPU Adapter, replacement part number (FRU) 43V5909, or NVIDIA Tesla M2050 GPU Adapter, replacement part number (FRU) 43V5925, into the expansion tray's side bay, the screw hole for the expansion chassis side cover/GPU card bracket and I/O slot apertures do not line up properly.

RETAIN tip: H197341

Symptom

When replacing or installing a double-wide NVIDIA Tesla M1060 GPU Adapter, replacement part number (FRU) 43V5909, or NVIDIA Tesla M2050 GPU Adapter, replacement part number (FRU) 43V5925, into the expansion tray's side bay, the screw hole for the expansion chassis side cover/GPU card bracket and I/O slot apertures do not line up properly.

Affected configurations

The system may be any of the following IBM servers:

  • iDataPlex dx360 M3 Server, type 6391, any model

The system is configured with one or more of the following IBM Options:

  • NVIDIA Tesla M1060 GPU Adapter, Option part number 43V5910, replacement part number (FRU) 43V5909
  • NVIDIA Tesla M2050 GPU Adapter, Option part number 43V5926, replacement part number (FRU) 43V5925

This tip is not software specific.

Workaround

Aligning the screw hole requires proper installation of the GPU card. Refer to the installation instructions and pictures in the following file below for proper installation:

Do not align the screw hole by forcefully moving the parts. This might cause damage to the riser socket or stress the solder connection between the slot and riser card, potentially causing a loss of connection between them.

Additional information

In a normal attempt to maintain distance between the back side (non-fan side) of the GPU card, and the surface of the expansion chassis, the installer improperly positions the card away from the chassis side. This usually results in the GPU card bracket resting on the corrugated edge of the EMI shield, causing the screw-hole misalignment.

Proper installation causes the flat surface of the GPU card I/O bracket to properly contact the corrugated surface of the EMI shield, aligning the screw hole.
