RETAIN tip: H197323
Symptom
For System x3400 M2, x3400 M3, x3500 M2, and x3500 M3:
The CPU2 VCore/CPU2 VDIMM values show as "Unavailable" or Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) "Get Sensor Reading" command returns error code 0xCB (Sensor Absent) after performing the following steps:
- Flash Integrated Management Module (IMM) firmware from yuoo57H to yuoo73M, and then reset the IMM.
- Log in to the IMM via the web page.
- Select System Status --> Voltage.
- Type the IPMI "Get Sensor Reading" command to query the sensor CPU2 Vcore/CPU2 VDIMM/VRM.
For iDataPlex dx360 M2 Server and iDataPlex dx360 M3 Server:
The IPMI "Get Sensor Reading" command returns error code 0xCB (Sensor Absent) after performing the following steps:
- Flash IMM firmware from yuoo57h to yuoo73m, and then reset the IMM.
- Type the IPMI "Get Sensor Reading" command to query sensor CPU 2/CPU 2 OverTemp.
Affected configurations
The system may be any of the following IBM servers:
- System x3400 M2, type 7836, any model
- System x3400 M2, type 7837, any model
- System x3400 M3, type 7378, any model
- System x3400 M3, type 7379, any model
- System x3500 M2, type 7839, any model
- System x3500 M3, type 7380, any model
- iDataPlex dx360 M2 Server, type 6380, any model
- iDataPlex dx360 M2 Server, type 7321, any model
- iDataPlex dx360 M2 Server, type 7323, any model
- iDataPlex dx360 M3 Server, type 6391, any model
This tip is not software specific.
This tip is not option specific.
The system is configured with two (2) CPU's.
The versions previous to yuoo84c firmware for the IMM is affected.
The following system firmware level(s) are affected:
- IMM yuoo73m
The system has the symptom described above.
Solution
This behavior is corrected with IMM firmware yuoo84c.
The file is or will be available by selecting the appropriate Product name, Product machine type, and Operating system on IBM Support's Fix Central web page, at the following URL:
http://www.ibm.com/support/fixcentral/systemx/groupView?query.productGroup=ibm%2FSystemx
Workaround
Restart the IMM via one of the following two (2) methods:
Method 1:
Reset via IMM web:
- Log in to the IMM via the web page.
- Go to the "Restart IMM" page.
- Press "Restart."
Method 2:
Reset via the Advanced Settings Utility (ASU) by typing the following command:
- asu rebootimm
Additional information
Sensor CPU2 VCore/CPU2 VDimm/VRM on System x High Volume models and CPU 2/ CPU 2 OverTemp on iDataPlex models are considered optional sensors whose presence statuses are retrieved once when IMM is ready.
This Symptom occurs when the IMM is rebooted from an update process. There will be a small amount of time when the internal update process is still ongoing. So, the status of optional devices, which may not have been set, cannot be gathered correctly.
Resetting the IMM again will ensure that every update process is done, and the status of the optional devices can be retrieved correctly.
The firmware Fix will have IMM query the status of the optional devices after internal update process is finished.
