Problem
When attempting to run a backup either the base operating system or in any of the guest or virtual operating system they fail to run. The guest or virtual operating system may see the tape drive, may be able to inventory the drive, or possibly even run aformat command to the drive. However, the tape drive fails to perform a back-up operation. This is true for any version of VMware, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 with Xen, SUSE Enterprise Linux Server 10 or 11 with Xen, or Microsoft Hyper V Server.

Symptom
When attempting to run a backup either the base operating system or in any of the guest or virtual operating system they fail to run. The guest or virtual operating system may see the tape drive, may be able to inventory the drive, or possibly even run a format command to the drive. However, the tape drive fails to perform a back-up operation.
This is true for any version of VMware, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 with Xen, SUSE Enterprise Linux Server 10 or 11 with Xen, or Microsoft Hyper V Server.
Affected configurations
The system is configured with at least one of the following:
- VMware ESX Server 1.5, any Update
- VMware ESX Server 2.0, any Update
- VMware ESX Server 2.1, any Update
- VMware ESX Server 2.5, any Update
- VMware ESX Server 3.0, any Update

- VMware ESXi 3.5 Installable, any Update
- VMware ESXi 4.0 Embedded, any Update
- VMware ESXi 4.0 Installable, any Update
- VMware ESXi 4.1 Embedded, any Update
- VMware ESXi 4.1 Installable, any Update
- VMware ESXi 5.0, any update
- VMware vSphere Hypervisor 4.1 with IBM Customization Embedded, any Update
- VMware vSphere Hypervisor 4.1 with IBM Customization Installable, any Update
- VMware vSphere Hypervisor 5.0 with IBM Customization Installable, any Update
