RETAIN tip: H197181
Symptom
The system will not boot after attaching the IBM MAX5 for System x, Option 59Y6265, expansion unit.
Affected configurations
The system may be any of the following IBM servers:
- System x3850 X5, type 7145, any model
- System x3850 X5, type 7146, any model
- System x3950 X5, type 7145, any model
The system is configured with one or more of the following IBM Options:
- IBM MAX5 for System x, Option 59Y6265
This tip is not software specific.
Workaround
Below are the minimum system firmware build levels required to attach the MAX5:
- Integrated Management Module (IMM) build level of yu00073h or later
- Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) build level of g0ud28A or later
- Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) build level of g0e122U or later
Additional information
The following are the firmware files required for System x3850 X5 operation. Follow the procedure in the exact sequence to update the firmware.
-
Download the following code to update the system:
- IMM build level of YU00073H or later
- FPGA build level of g0ud28A or later
- UEFI build level of g0e122U or later
- IMM build level of YU00073H or later
- Verify that the QuickPath Interconnect (QPI) cables between the x3850 X5 and the MAX5 are not attached.
- Boot up the x3850 X5 system then go to the UEFI setup screen by pressing F1. Leave the system in the UEFI setup screen.
- Connect the x3850 X5's IMM Ethernet port interface to your network or directly to the workstation from where you will be running the updates.
- Open an internet browser and connect to the IMM web interface by browsing to the IMM's Internet Protocol (IP) address (the default IP address is 192.168.70.125. The default user ID is USERID and the default password is PASSW0RD (with a zero)). Once in the IMM web page, click on ?Firmware Update? and browse to the location of the update files.
-
Update the IMM firmware with imm_yuoo73f.upd (or greater). This will take few minutes to get code loaded and programmed. It will indicate completion of the task.
Note: You can obtain imm_yuoo73H.upd by extracting it from ibm_fw_imm_yuoo73H_windows_32-64.exe or greater version. When you execute this file, you will be able to select to extract the files to the local hard drive.
Continue with steps 5 and 6 after the IMM update completes.
Important: Do not reboot at this time.
- Update ibm_fw_fpga_g0ud28a_anyos_i386.upd (FPGA version g0ud28a or greater). You can obtain ibm_fw_fpga_g0ud28a_anyos_i386.upd by extracting it from ibm_fw_fpga_g0ud28a_windows_32-64.exe or greater version.
- Update to ibm_fw_uefi_g0e122U_anyos_i386.upd (UEFI version g0e122U or greater). You can obtain ibm_fw_uefi_g0e122U_anyos_i386.upd by extracting it from ibm_fw_uefi_g0e122U_windows_32-64.exe or greater version.
- Press the power button to power off the machine.
- Remove AC Power, then reconnect AC power to cycle the system.
- Wait 5-10 minutes, then press the power button to power on the machine.
-
Enter the UEFI Setup screen by pressing F1 during boot-up again and verify the following:
- The firmware level is correct and the Vital Product Data (VPD) levels match those that you used for the update.
- The memory installed on each machine is as expected.
- The firmware level is correct and the Vital Product Data (VPD) levels match those that you used for the update.
- In the UEFI Setup screen, select the LOAD DEFAULTS option.
- In the UEFI setup screen, go to the IMM configuration and reset the IMM configuration to the defaults.
-
Shut the machine down in the following sequence:
- Power off the x3850 X5.
- Remove the AC power at the Power Distribution Unit (PDU).
- Power off the x3850 X5.
- Connect the QPI cables between the x3850 X5 and the MAX5.
- Plug in the AC power cables on the x3850 X5 and the MAX5.
- Power on the x3850 X5 and verify that all memory internal to the x3850 X5 and the MAX5 is seen.
