Instructions on how to setup a USB device as the remote backup location.

Troubleshooting

Problem

Continuous Data Protection for Files or Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack for Workstations can get confused and start backing up data to different USB devices.

Cause

If you select an external USB device as your remote target for protection, and then subsequently unplug the device and plug in a different device, The application may not be able to recognize the appropriate device and will not back up your files efficiently.

Resolving The Problem

Create a directory on your local drive that will be used as the mount point for this device.
In this example, we created the directory C:\disks\usbkey1.

Plug in the device. Note the drive letter that gets assigned to the device.
In this example, we will use X:

To define the mount point from the Windows interface, do the following:
1. Right click on the "My Computer" icon on your desktop and select the Manage option.

2. When the Computer Management Console appears, select
Computer Management (Local)/System Tools/Storage/Disk Management
in the left-hand navigation tree.

3. In the disk list on the right-hand side, find the disk that corresponds to the USB device
(X: in this example).
Right click that disk and select "Change Drive Letters and Path...".

4. In the resulting dialog box, click the Add button and add the mount point.
( "C:\disks\usbkey1" in this example).

or;

To define the mount point using the Windows command window, do the following:
1. From a command window, run the following command:
mountvol X: /L
The command will return output like the following:
\\?\Volume{75c5f52b-3006-11db-a750-0016cf0d47cf}\

2. Copy the output into the following mountvol command:
mountvol c:\drives\usbkey1 \\?\Volume{75c5f52b-3006-11db-a750-0016cf0d47cf}\

Now you can reference the contents of the USB device (the device must be plugged in)
using the "c:\disks\usbkey1" path, even after a reboot.

CDP Version 2.2

To point Continuous Data Protection for Files to that device, open the Continuous Protection page on the Continuous Data Protection for Files user interface
and select "Disk" in the Remote Storage "Backup to:" field and enter "c:\disks\usbkey1" in the Remote Storage "Location:" field and click the Save button. Continuous Data Protection for Files will now use the USB device as the remote storage location.

CDP Version 3.1 or TSM FastBack for Workstations 6.1
To point to that remote device, open user interface.
Click on the Settings tab at the top of Status page
Select the Remote Storage tab, under "Back up to:" field select "External Device" for "Location:" field enter "C:\disks\usbkey1" click Apply then OK.
CDP will now use the USB device as the remote storage location.

----------
Known issue in the Release Note:
USB drive may be displayed as a location of Local Storage Backup To:.
If you connect a USB drive, you may see this as an option under the Local Storage Backup To: drop down list. Do not select this item. Any external hard drive is considered a remote location and should be configured under the Remote Storage location as a Disk.
