Troubleshooting
Problem
The physical location of Dual In-Line Memory Modules (DIMMs) may appear inconsistent as reported by events in the Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) System Event Log (SEL) and by events in the Integrated Management Module (IMM) Chassis Event Log (CEL). For example, if a memory error occurs on: Memory Card 7, Dual In-Line Memory Module (DIMM) 3, The IPMI SEL will report this as "DIMM 7003," and the IMM CEL reports this same error as "DIMM 51."
Resolving The Problem
Source
RETAIN tip: H196721
Symptom
The physical location of Dual In-Line Memory Modules (DIMMs) may appear inconsistent as reported by events in the Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) System Event Log (SEL) and by events in the Integrated Management Module (IMM) Chassis Event Log (CEL).
For example, if a memory error occurs on:
Memory Card 7, Dual In-Line Memory Module (DIMM) 3,
The IPMI SEL will report this as "DIMM 7003," and the IMM CEL reports this same error as "DIMM 51."
Affected configurations
The system may be any of the following IBM servers:
- System x3850 X5, type 7145, any model
- System x3850 X5, type 7146, any model
- System x3950 X5, type 7145, any model
This tip is not software specific.
This tip is not option specific.
The following system firmware level(s) are affected:
- IMM Firmware
Solution
This behavior will be corrected in a future release of IMM firmware.
The target date for this release is scheduled for Second Quarter 2010.
The file is available by selecting the appropriate machine type on the 'Software and device drivers - IBM System x' web page, at the following URL:
Workaround
Use this table to map errors reported in the IPMI SEL vs the IMM CEL vs Physical DIMM Location:
| IPMI SEL | IMM CEL | Physical DIMM Location |
|---|---|---|
| DIMM 1001 | DIMM 01-08 | DIMM 1-8 on Memory card 1 |
| DIMM 2001 | DIMM 09-16 | DIMM 1-8 on Memory card 2 |
| DIMM 3001 | DIMM 15-24 | DIMM 1-8 on Memory card 3 |
| DIMM 4001 | DIMM 25-32 | DIMM 1-8 on Memory card 4 |
| DIMM 5001 | DIMM 33-40 | DIMM 1-8 on Memory card 5 |
| DIMM 6001 | DIMM 41-48 | DIMM 1-8 on Memory card 6 |
| DIMM 7001 | DIMM 49-56 | DIMM 1-8 on Memory card 7 |
| DIMM 8001 | DIMM 57-64 | DIMM 1-8 on Memory card 8 |
Additional information
The table above can be used to determine the DIMM number and Card number from the DIMM number reported in the CEL.
When the Fix is installed, the CEL will report the DIMM number and Card number separately. The table will no longer be required to map the suspect DIMM.
