Problem

When installing an Operating System (OS) or adding disks to an OS, the user may encounter the following issues: - Cannot install the OS when the logical drive is larger than 2 terabytes (TB). - The OS installs, but the user cannot use all of the spacewith a logical drive above 2 TB. - During the installation, the user may encounter a blue screen. Using the ServerGuide CD, the user may encounter a blue screen. This Symptom applies to Windows, VMware, and Linux.

Symptom

When installing an Operating System (OS) or adding disks to an OS, the user may encounter the following issues:

  • Cannot install the OS when the logical drive is larger than 2 terabytes (TB).
  • The OS installs, but the user cannot use all of the space with a logical drive above 2 TB.
  • During the installation, the user may encounter a blue screen. Using the ServerGuide CD, the user may encounter a blue screen.

This Symptom applies to Windows, VMware, and Linux.

Workaround

Each OS has limitations.

Master Boot Record (MBR) is limited to 2 TB at a block size of 512 bytes.

GUID Partition Table (GUID Partition Tables (GPT) does not have this limitation.

This is an OS limitation.

Microsoft Windows: Windows 2003 Prior to Service pack 1 is limited to MBR. Use GPT for volumes larger then 2 TB.
