Problem

A system with any IBM ServeRAID 8 series adapter (8i, 8k, 8k-l,or 8s) may fail to complete Power On Self Test (POST) and will report the following message when a defective hard drive has been detected by the ServeRAID firmware: Fatal Error: Controller Kernel PANIC !! Symptom

A system with any IBM ServeRAID 8 series adapter (8i, 8k, 8k-l,or 8s) may fail to complete Power On Self Test (POST) and will report the following message when a defective hard drive has been detected by the ServeRAID firmware:

Fatal Error: Controller Kernel PANIC !! Unknown Firmware
Error Error Code: 07

Controller not started

BIOS not installed!

Note: The failing hard drive will have an abnormal blinking green Light Emitting Diode (LED) while in this failing Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAID) controller firmware condition.

The system is configured with one or more of the following IBM Options:

  • ServeRAID-8i Controller, Option 13N2227, FRU 39R8731
  • ServeRAID-8k SAS Controller, Option 25R8064, FRU 25R8076
  • ServeRAID-8k-l SAS Controller, Option 39R8729, FRU 39R8731
  • ServeRAID-8s SAS PCIe Controller, Option 39R8765, FRU 39R8785

This tip is not software specific.

  • The ServeRAID v5.2.0-15432 firmware for the ServeRAID-8i, 8k, 8k-l and 8s controllers is affected.

The system has the symptom described above.

Solution

This behavior will be corrected in a next IBM ServeRAID-8i, 8k, 8k-l, and 8s Basic Input/Output System (BIOS)/ Firmware update version 5.2.0-15434 or newer.

The target date for this release is scheduled for Third Quarter 2010.

The referenced file will be available from the "ServeRAID Software Matrix"

Workaround

  1. Identify the failing hard drive location.
  2. Power down the server.
  3. Remove the defective hard drive.
  4. Power up the server to confirm that the array is in a critical state.
  5. Replace the defective hard drive.

Additional information

It was discovered that the storage BUS layer of the ServeRAID firmware was accessing an invalid pointer during the discovery of Serial Attached SCSI (SAS)/Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (SATA) drives while requesting the extended inquiry.

This issue was fixed by assigning the correct pointer during the hard drive discovery phase of the ServeRAID firmware.
