Incorrect boot sequence after WOL and AC Restored/Warm boot - IBM System x3200 M3 (7327, 7328), System x3250 M3 (4251, 4252, 4261)

Symptom

A System installed with any of the following Intel Clarkdale processors will not follow the defining boot sequence under two (2) conditions:

Condition 1:

When a system with the Intel Clarkdale processor (Celeron G1101, Core i3-530/540, Pentium G6950) is installed and boots up via Wake on LAN (WOL), the system does not follow the Primary Boot Sequence after an AC is restored.

Condition 2:

When a system boots up via WOL, the system does not follow the WOL Boot Sequence after a warm reboot.

Affected configurations

The system may be any of the following IBM servers:

• System x3200 M3, type 7327, any model
• System x3200 M3, type 7328, any model
• System x3250 M3, type 4251, any model
• System x3250 M3, type 4252, any model
• System x3250 M3, type 4261, any model

The system is configured with one or more of the following IBM Options:

• Dual-core Intel Celeron G1101 2.26 GHz/1066 MHz (2 MB cache)
• Dual-core Intel Core i3-530 2.93 GHz/1333 MHz (4 MB cache)
• Dual-core Intel Core i3-540 3.06 GHz/1333 MHz (4 MB cache)
• Dual-core Intel Pentium G6950 2.8 GHz/1066 MHz (3 MB cache)

This tip is not software specific.

The following system BIOS level(s) are affected:

• GYE129A

The system has the symptom described above.

Solution

This behavior has been corrected in the latest release of Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) v1.03 or later and Integrated Management Module (IMM) 48D or later.

Workaround

Condition 1:

Users can manually power off and then power on.

Condition 2:

Users can adjust the Primary Boot Sequence to be the same as the Secondary (WOL) Boot Sequence that the users expect in the setup utility of the UEFI.

Additional information

Condition 1:

The improper boot sequence is caused by an unknown system wake up type from the IMM. UEFI is forced to use the previous Boot Sequence due to an unknown value received.

Condition 2:

The issue is under investigation and will only occur if Intel Clarkdale processors are installed. The issue is caused by an undefined value related to the system boot up type. The UEFI is forced to use the Primary Boot Sequence due to an undefined value received.
