Problem
With Windows 2008 64-bit VM running on SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 (SLES 11) 64-bit XEN, if the virtual Network Interface Controller (NIC) of VM is specified to a full-virtualized Intel e1000 NIC, Local Area Network (LAN) stress on Windows VM may fail.

Symptom
With Windows 2008 64-bit VM running on SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 (SLES 11) 64-bit XEN, if the virtual Network Interface Controller (NIC) of VM is specified to a full-virtualized Intel e1000 NIC, Local Area Network (LAN) stress on Windows VM may fail.
Affected configurations
The system is configured with at least one of the following:
- SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11, 64-bit XEN, any Service Pack

In the instance of ECC errors, it cannot be guaranteed that the cause is solely the Memory Dual In-Line Memory Module (DIMM); therefore, both the controller, as well as the memory, should always be replaced.
If the user has upgraded to a 1 Gigabyte (GB) DIMM, both the controller and the 1 GB memory option should be replaced.
If the user still has the original controller that was shipped with the 512 megabyte (MB) DIMM, only the controller has to be replaced (which includes a new 512 DIMM in replacement part number (FRU)).
Workaround
The user can choose other NICs, such as the Fully Virtualized Realtek 8139 NIC.
Additional information
Novell is working on a fix for this issue.
The symptom is caused by a NIC emulation issue in the SLES 11 XEN kernel, which has limitations on e1000 virtual NIC support. Novell recommends using a Fully Virtualized Realtek 8139 NIC in XEN, which is the default virtual NIC option.
