IMM reports fan and voltage errors after power cycle - IBM System x3200 M3, x3250 M3

Troubleshooting

Problem

[This abstract has been concatenated due to length constraints] The Integrated Management Module (IMM) reports the errors below after consecutive system power cycling. On both the System x3200 M3 and System x3250 M3 system: - Numeric sensor "system board 12V" going low (lower critical) has asserted - Numeric sensor "system board 5V" going low (lower critical) has asserted - Numeric sensor "system board 3.3V" going low (lower critical) has asserted - Numeric sensor "PCH 1.05V" going low (lower critical) has asserted - Numeric sensor "CPU VDIMM" going low (lower critical) has asserted On System x3200 M3: - Numeric sensor "SYS Fan Tach" going low (lower critical) has asserted - Numeric sensor "CPU Fan Tach" going low (lower critical) has asserted -Numeric sensor "HDD Fan Tach" going low (lower critical) has asserted On System x3250 M3: - Numeric sensor "Fan 1 Tach" going low (lower critical) has asserted - Numeric sensor "Fa

Resolving The Problem

Symptom

The Integrated Management Module (IMM) reports the errors below after consecutive system power cycling.

On both the System x3200 M3 and System x3250 M3 system:

Numeric sensor "system board 12V" going low (lower critical) has asserted
Numeric sensor "system board 5V" going low (lower critical) has asserted
Numeric sensor "system board 3.3V" going low (lower critical) has asserted
Numeric sensor "PCH 1.05V" going low (lower critical) has asserted
Numeric sensor "CPU VDIMM" going low (lower critical) has asserted

On System x3200 M3:

Numeric sensor "SYS Fan Tach" going low (lower critical) has asserted
Numeric sensor "CPU Fan Tach" going low (lower critical) has asserted
Numeric sensor "HDD Fan Tach" going low (lower critical) has asserted

On System x3250 M3:

Numeric sensor "Fan 1 Tach" going low (lower critical) has asserted
Numeric sensor "Fan 2 Tach" going low (lower critical) has asserted
Numeric sensor "Fan 3 Tach" going low (lower critical) has asserted
Numeric sensor "Fan 4 Tach" going low (lower critical) has asserted
Numeric sensor "Fan 5 Tach" going low (lower critical) has asserted

After several seconds, the IMM reports error recovery messages for these errors.

Affected configurations

The system may be any of the following IBM servers:

  • System x3200 M3, type 7327, any model
  • System x3200 M3, type 7328, any model
  • System x3250 M3, type 4251, any model
  • System x3250 M3, type 4252, any model
  • System x3250 M3, type 4261, any model

This tip is not option specific.

Solution

This behavior has been corrected in IMM firmware update version 1.07 - Build ID: yuoo48e and later.

The file will be available by selecting the appropriate machine type on the 'Software and device drivers - IBM System x' web page, at the following URL:

Workaround

Connect to the web/Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) card via serial cable or through the browser interface and change the power-on segment time to forty (40) seconds or more.

Additional information

These are false errors and can be ignored until the next IMM firmware update is available.

There is no affect on production.

During consecutive system power cycling, the IMM may get invalid voltage or fan readings when powering on, not filter them correctly, and report false lower voltage errors.

The Fix will provide a checking mechanism to prevent this from occurring.
