When attempting to add node groups through the High Performance Computing (HPC) cluster manager Graphical User Interface (GUI) node management tab, there is a limit of 100 groups.
Affected configurations
The system is configured with at least one of the following:
- Microsoft Windows Server 2008, Datacenter 64-bit, any service pack
- Microsoft Windows Server 2008, Enterprise 64-bit, any service pack
- Microsoft Windows Server 2008, Standard 64-bit, any service pack
This tip is not hardware specific.
This tip is not option specific.
The Microsoft HPC Cluster Manager utility is affected.
Note: This does not imply that the network operating system will work under all combinations of hardware and software.

Node groups can be added using PowerShell. To run the HPC Powershell, open the Start Menu and click All Programs. In this menu, the folder Microsoft HPC Pack contains a shortcut to HPC PowerShell.
The command New-HpcGroup in the HPC PowerShell allows the user to add new groups. In addition to this command, the user can add nodes to a group using a command in the following form:
| Add-HpcGroup -NodeName %NAME% -Name %GROUP% |
Run the following command using HPC PowerShell to extend the number of groups beyond 100:
| New-HpcGroup |
In addition to this command, the user can add nodes to a group using a command in the following form:
| Add-HpcGroup -NodeName %NAME% -Name %GROUP% |
Additional information
Microsoft's GUI adds an arbitrary limit to the number of groups. Microsoft's Command Line Interface (CLI) does not have this limit. Use the CLI command to workaround the GUI limitation.
