Problem
There is an option in Windows to shut down the Operating System (OS), but leave the hardware powered on. Approximately one-third of the time that this function is used, the system will enter hibernation mode instead.

Symptom
There is an option in Windows to shut down the Operating System (OS), but leave the hardware powered on.
Approximately one-third of the time that this function is used, the system will enter hibernation mode instead.
Affected configurations
The system may be any of the following IBM Servers:
- BladeCenter HS22, type 1936, any model
- BladeCenter HS22, type 7870, any model
- System x3400 M2, type 7836, any model
- System x3400 M2, type 7837, any model
- System x3500 M2, type 7839, any model
- System x3550 M2, type 7946, any model
- System x3650 M2, type 4199, any model
- System x3650 M2, type 7947, any model
The system is configured with at least one of the following:
- Microsoft Windows 2003 Server, any service pack
- Microsoft Windows 2003 Server for 32-bit Servers, any service pack
- Microsoft Windows 2003 Server for 64-bit Servers, any service pack
- Microsoft Windows 2003 Server, Datacenter Edition, any service pack
- Microsoft Windows 2003 Server, x64 Edition, any service pack
- Microsoft Windows Server 2008, Datacenter 32-bit, any service pack
- Microsoft Windows Server 2008, Datacenter 64-bit, any service pack
- Microsoft Windows Server 2008, Enterprise 32-bit, any service pack
- Microsoft Windows Server 2008, Enterprise 64-bit, any service pack
- Microsoft Windows Server 2008, Standard 32-bit, any service pack
- Microsoft Windows Server 2008, Standard 64-bit, any service pack
- Microsoft Windows Vista 64-bit Business Edition, any service pack
- Microsoft Windows Vista, x64 Business, any service pack
- Microsoft Windows Vista, x64 Enterprise, any service pack
- Microsoft Windows Vista, x64 Ultimate, any service pack
- Microsoft Windows Vista, x86 Business, any service pack
- Microsoft Windows Vista, x86 Enterprise, any service pack
- Microsoft Windows Vista, x86 Home Basic Edition, any service pack
- Microsoft Windows Vista, x86 Ultimate, any service pack
This tip is not option specific.
Note: This does not imply that the network operating system will work under all combinations of hardware and software.

This issue occurs on Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008. It is resolved in Windows Server 2008 R2.
If this feature is required, use Windows Server 2008 R2.
Workaround
To avoid seeing this issue in Windows 2003 or Windows 2008, do not change the "Local Computer Policy -System" setting to "Do not turn off system power after a Windows system shutdown." Leave the setting in the default state.
Additional information
To enable the Windows option to leave the system powered on after the OS shuts down, complete the following steps:

From the command prompt, type the following:
gpedit.msc
- Select Local Computer Policy.
- Select Computer Configuration.
- Select Administrative templates.
- Select System.
- On the right side, select "Do not turn off system power after a Windows system shutdown."
