Critical low fan speed reported - IBM iDataPlex

Troubleshooting

Problem

When power cycling two system board trays in the same chassis (dx360 M2, 2U Flex chassis), a fan lower critical error can occur. Upon powering the systems back up, the system will not automatically recover from this event. This issue can be verified by the system error Light Emitting Diode (LED) being lit and the following messages being displayed in the Integrated Management Module (IMM) System Event Log (SEL): Fan, Lower Critical - going low (Fan 1 Tach reading 320 RPM with threshold 1520 RPM) Fan, Lower Critical - going low (Fan 2 Tach reading 240 RPM with threshold 1520 RPM) Fan, Lower Critical - going low (Fan 3 Tach reading 320 RPM with threshold 1520 RPM) Fan, Lower Critical - going low (Fan 4 Tach reading320 RPM with threshold 1520 RPM)

Symptom

When power cycling two system board trays in the same chassis (dx360 M2, 2U Flex chassis), a fan lower critical error can occur. Upon powering the systems back up, the system will not automatically recover from this event.

This issue can be verified by the system error Light Emitting Diode (LED) being lit and the following messages being displayed in the Integrated Management Module (IMM) System Event Log (SEL):

Fan, Lower Critical - going low (Fan 1 Tach reading 320 RPM
with threshold 1520 RPM)
Fan, Lower Critical - going low (Fan 2 Tach reading 240 RPM
with threshold 1520 RPM)
Fan, Lower Critical - going low (Fan 3 Tach reading 320 RPM
with threshold 1520 RPM)
Fan, Lower Critical - going low (Fan 4 Tach reading 320 RPM
with threshold 1520 RPM)

Affected configurations

The system may be any of the following IBM Servers:

  • System x iDataPlex dx360 M2 Server, type 6380, any model
  • System x iDataPlex dx360 M2 Server, type 7321, any model
  • System x iDataPlex dx360 M2 Server, type 7323, any model

This tip is not software specific.

This tip is not option specific.

The xCAT, ipmitool utility is affected.

The following system firmware level(s) are affected:

  • IMM firmware 19E

Solution

This behavior will be corrected in a future release of IMM firmware.

The target date for this release is scheduled for second quarter 2009.

The file will be available from the IBM System x Support web site at the following URL:

  http://www.ibm.com/systems/support/

Workaround

To recover the system error LED, the following command would need to be run:

  ipmitool mc reset cold

An alternative workaround to prevent this issue from occurring is to not power on/off both system boards simultaneously.
