Microsoft Windows 2003 will expose/display hibernation (S4) option under the 'Power Options' Control Panel applet even if system firmware reports no S4 support. This symptom occurs only when the system has less than 4 GB of physical memory.

Issue

Windows 2003 will expose/display hibernation (S4) option under the 'Power Options' Control Panel applet even if system firmware reports no S4 support.

This symptom occurs only when the system has less than 4 GB of physical memory.

Affected configurations

The system may be any of the following IBM servers:

  • iDataPlex dx360 M2 Server, type 6380, any model
  • iDataPlex dx360 M2 Server, type 7321, any model
  • iDataPlex dx360 M2 Server, type 7323, any model
  • BladeCenter HS22, type 7870, any model
  • System x3400 M2, type 7836, any model
  • System x3400 M2, type 7837, any model
  • System x3500 M2, type 7839, any model
  • System x3550 M2, type 7946, any model
  • System x3650 M2, type 7947, any model

This tip is not option specific.

The system is configured with at least one of the following:

  • Microsoft Windows 2003 Server, any service pack
  • Microsoft Windows 2003 Server for 32-bit Servers, any service pack
  • Microsoft Windows 2003 Server for 64-bit Servers, any service pack
  • Microsoft Windows 2003 Server, Datacenter Edition, any service pack
  • Microsoft Windows 2003 Server, EE x64, any service pack
  • Microsoft Windows 2003 Server, x64 Edition, any service pack

Additional information

This is "by-design" of Windows 2003.

The "Enable hibernation" check box under "Control Panel" -> 'Power Options' -> 'Hibernate' is disabled by default.

The 'Hibernate' tab will appear even if system firmware states no S4 support.

Do not enable hibernation on the system. It's strongly advised not to enable this S4 hibernation option on the system.

If hibernation is enabled, Windows 2003 will still place the system into S4 even though the system firmware states no S4 support. When Windows attempts to resume from S4 the system may not resume successfully. If this should occur Windows will need to be restarted to its normal boot process.
